Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic: Fame in Penang, Infamy in JB

—–

I REMEMBER PENANG WITH NOSTALGIA

Many of the childhood school holidays of my siblings and me were spent in Penang, mostly in Air Hitam, where our maternal grandmother lived with Aunt and her children (our cousins).

As a teenager, I went there often.

In 1982-85, my wife and I worked and lived in Penang, and in those years, our first and second sons lived with us. Son No. 3 was born after we had left Penang and returned to Ipoh.

I have many fond memories of Penang.

FACT OR FICTION?

ANTI-PENANG GROUPS: INVESTORS ARE LEAVING PENANG.

Who are these? UMNO, MCA and Gerakan. They have NOTHING good too say about a Penang run by the Opposition.

Not true investors leaving, says Penang agency

Penang remains the third most preferred destination in Malaysia for investments last year and in the first half of this year, despite recent speculation that investors were leaving its manufacturing sector.

Penang contributed RM4.33 billion worth of investment in the first half of 2015, and  RM8.16 billion for all of last year. Of this, domestic and foreign investments made up RM3.05 billion and RM5.11 billion, respectively, investPenang director Datuk Lee Kah Choon said.

The electrical and electronics (E&E) sector alone contributed RM4.8 billion in 2014 and RM2.7 billion in the first half of this year.

Lee said such figures did not spell trouble for the manufacturing industry in the northern state of the peninsula.

New investments are in the pipeline for the Malaysia’s “Silicon Valley of the East”, which already hosts 300 multinational corporations (MNCs), he added.

“The global semiconductor industry is going through the process of consolidation so that companies can diversify their operations and gain market share, and at the same time acquire advanced technologies.

“Penang as a global semiconductor and electronic hub and one of the most attractive locations for MNCs is not exempted from the effects of M&As,” he told The Malaysian Insider in an email interview.

The places where you are likely to have your wheels clamped are  near the shopping malls and business districts. Danger spots are Persiaran Gurney and Pulau Tikus.

If your car is parked in a lot designated for the disabled but you are not physically impaired, your car will also get clamped!

For the record, the council’s enforcement team (clamping division) clamped 7,169 vehicles and towed away 354 for illegal parking between January and last month. By Muhamad Syakir Abdul Wahab

MCA condemns Umno Youth for attack on enforcement officers

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 22 — MCA lashed out at its coalition partner Umno today for the alleged involvement of its youth wing members in the attack on enforcement officers at Teluk Bahang.

Permatang Pauh MCA division chief Datuk Ma Kok Ben urged Umno to view the incident seriously, saying the “thuggish behaviour” shown against the Penang Island Municipal Council enforcement officers was unacceptable.

“Umno leaders must seriously review this act of violence by its grassroot leaders,” he said in a press statement issued today.

Ma was referring to a scuffle that broke out between enforcement officers and a group of youths believed to be from Malay rights group Perkasa, Umno and Pekida during an operation to remove illegal stalls at Teluk Bahang yesterday.

“No matter how justified they may feel to defend the stall owners, roughing up anyone is simply wrong,” Ma said.

Rock blocked!

A five-tonne boulder causes a massive traffic jam in Jalan Tun Sardon, Balik Pulau, when it rolls down a hill and nearly slams into a woman on a bike.

The woman cheated death by seconds. I would not dare imagine if it (the boulder) had struck her — AZAN SULAIMAN

FRANTIC shouts by a man saved a female motorcyclist from being crushed by a boulder which came crashing down a hill in Jalan Tun Sardon, Balik Pulau.

Gigantic drop: A Rapid Penang bus passing by the huge boulder at KM5.85 in Jalan Tun Sardon, Balik Pulau, Penang.

The boulder, said to be weighing around five tons, rolled down when the hillside gave way due to soil erosion, believed to be caused by heavy showers over the past few days and intermittent downpour yesterday.

Azan Sulaiman, 45, when met at the scene, said that he was riding toward George Town through Jalan Tun Sardon when he heard a loud crash and saw trees being uprooted in front of him.

“I panicked when I heard the loud sounds and when I saw the female motorcyclist coming from the opposite direction, all I could do was shout. I yelled and waved my hand at her to swerve away and barely seconds later, the boulder crashed down.

“The woman cheated death by seconds. I would not dare imagine if it (the boulder) had struck her.

“I too am thankful to be alive,” he said.

During the 1pm incident yesterday, the enormous rock blocked one of the two-lane Jalan Tun Sardon at KM5.85, bringing traffic to almost a standstill.

A larger excavator was then brought in to move the boulder.

The uprooted trees that fell onto the road were promptly removed to ease traffic flow.

Ernest Zacharevic Murals of George Town

Ernest Zacharevic is a young Lithuania-born artist who is “making a scene” on the streets of George Town, Penang. This comes in the form of beautifully executed wall paintings, or murals, at selected streets in the inner city. The project, known as Mirrors George Town, is part of George Town Festival 2012.

Ernest Zacharevic’s wall paintings in George Town include figure drawings and portraitures that celebrate the exuberance of life in the inner city. They range from the pensive “Boy on a Bike”, the lively “Little Children on a Bicycle” to the whimsical “Little Boy with Pet Dinosaur”.

So far six murals have been completed, with perhaps one more in the making. The project is funded by George Town Festival while the paint was sponsored by a paint company, Murobond.

The process began with Zacharevic combing the city, looking for suitable walls. After he has selected the walls to be painted, the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) contact and obtain a signed agreement from the property owner. Then he starts working on his mural. In the process, he is generating much interest from passer-by traffic, becoming a welcoming sight in the city. As the project becomes increasingly popular, more people started offering their walls.

‘Great Wall of Penang’ taking shape along Magazine Road

GEORGE TOWN: Thirteen more paintings are being drawn on a 50.3m stretch of wall along Magazine Road here, further cementing the image of the state capital as a city of murals.

The project, dubbed as the “Great Wall of Penang”, will depict the island in its older days and what it would look like in the future.

Art teacher Jim Oo Chun Hee, 26, who is among those who initiated the mural project as an effort to showcase the art of Penang, said the project began in June last year and was expected to be completed in a year.

He said he had obtained permission from the Penang Municipal Council to paint on the wall as the premises belonged to the council which uses it as a recycling centre.
