Customers to pay more for lorry transport
Two lorry associations say they have no choice but to pass the cost of increased diesel prices to their customers.
KUALA LUMPUR: Two lorry associations have said that they have no choice but to charge more for transportation thereby transferring the recently announced increase in diesel prices, to their customers.
Pan-Malaysian Lorry Owners’ Association president Jong Foh Jit said the increase was inevitable as refraining from transferring this increase would negatively impact operating costs.
“We can’t do anything about the diesel price increase. However our business relies on this energy source, so we have no other option but to increase our transportation costs,” Jong told a leading Chinese newspaper.
Meanwhile Alvin Chong of the Selangor Lorry Owners’ Association said the increase of diesel by 10% would result in the increase in transportation fees by 3-5%.

Tarif elektrik naik lagi?
Agensi tenaga elektrik, MyPower Corp Bhd menjangka kenaikan tarif elektrik bermula bulan depan, enam bulan selepas Putrajaya mengumumkan tarif elektrik baru Januari lalu.

Energy agency, MyPower Corp Bhd expects to increase electricity tariffs next month, six months after Putrajaya announced new electricity tariff in January.
MyPower said the increase was inevitable in view of the international gas prices.
“MyPower said they remain with the mechanism proposed Cabinet Implementation of Emissions Fuel Costs (FCPT), in which tariffs will be aligned based on international gas prices every six months.
“The first Penyelarian next month that will result in increased electricity tariffs for domestic gas prices lower than international,” said MyPower quoted in The Star today.

Nestle to increase Milo’s price by 5% to 7%
KUALA LUMPUR: A cup of milo will cost more next month as Nestle Malaysia plans to increase the price of Malaysia’s favourite beverage by 5% to 7% from May 1.
Nestle’s managing director Alois Hofbauer said the price increase was inevitable following the price hike in milk products last February due to higher raw material prices.
“Commodities costs are going high, including milk, coffee and cocoa, we have to find ways to offset headwinds internally as we could not absorb all these (costs) increases,” he told a press conference after the company’s AGM here yesterday.
Hofbauer doesn’t rule out the possibility of more price hikes in future as commodities prices are not expected to ease this year.
However, he stressed that any price hikes would be gradual to avoid increasing consumers burden, which in turn could affect demand for its products.

So now price hikes are Pakatan’s fault?
MP SPEAKS Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor has accused pro-opposition middlemen of deliberately increasing the prices of goods and services, in order to incite hatred against Barisan Nasional (BN).
…
It is of the biggest irony when the minister pointed out unscrupulous middlemen raising prices because it has been BN policy over the past three decades to cultivate crony businessmen to dominate, monopolise and control many basic goods and services.
Whose middlemen, Pakatan’s or BN’s?
The price of rice has been rising because Bernas Bhd, a private company owned by Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary was given the monopoly right to import rice on behalf of rice-traders, making fat and easy profits while causing the price of these rice to rise. The same applies many other basic goods such as sugar.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd was forced by the BN government to purchase a majority of its electricity from independent power producer at prices significantly higher than what it could produce on its own, causing the tariffs to increase.
The prices of medicine in our hospitals are up to 148 percent higher than in Australia, because the government forces our hospitals to purchase them through the designated “middleman”, Pharmaniaga Bhd.
Hundreds, if not thousands of projects are awarded annually by the government at higher cost and lower quality, purely because they are given via our renowned ‘Ali Baba’ system. In this system, the a crony middlemen gets awarded an inflated contract and subcontracts substantial portions of the works, if not all of it to actual businesses to carry out the work.
One such infamous project is the RM482 million Shah Alam Hospital that was awarded to Sunshine Fleet Sdn Bhd, but was sub-contracted lock, stock and barrel to a subcontractor for RM451 million in 2007. The project has stalled with no visibility of completion despite hundreds of millions of ringgit paid.

Najib orders ministry to act against profiteers
EASING PEOPLE’S BURDEN: PM wants those who raise food prices to be charged in court
PUTRAJAYA: PRIME Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has directed the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry to take stern action against business operators who raise food prices.
He said this includes charging them in court.
“If they are found increasing their prices, the government will not hesitate to take action.”
…
WILL THAT WORK? DOES THE GOVERNMENT HAVE ANY AUTHORITY TO FORCE TRADERS TO KEEP PRICES DOWN? Can it charge traders in court for profiteering?
No, says Citizen Nades, Editor (Special and Investigative Reporting) at theSun.
“There is no law against profiteering. Period,” Citizen Nades, theSun.

Face reality – tell the truth
Last updated on 12 January 2014 – 09:02pm
The message is simple – stop giving the people false hopes by “threatening” traders or retailers who raise prices because there are no laws which prevent them from raising prices.
Please do not give false hopes to consumers by making all kinds of statements and promises. If you don’t deliver or are unable to keep them, you make the rakyat even angrier. Talk about sending hundreds of enforcement officers out to the field to “check on increases” is nothing but pure bunkum!
If your officers have not already briefed you, allow me to enlighten you. Let is be categorically stated that our system is one of free enterprise – willing buyer-willing seller at a price agreed upon. If the buyer cannot agree on the price, he chooses another source.
The government will not and does not fix prices of raw or cooked food, or that matter any commodity. The fixing of petrol and diesel prices is merely an administrative arrangement between the government and the oil companies.
The price of a cup of tea varies from location to location. It may cost RM1.20 in a stall; perhaps RM2 in a restaurant; RM12 in an up market shopping mall and even RM20 in a five-star hotel.
So, if the stall operator increases his price to RM1.50, does it amount to profiteering? No, but he has committed an offence if he does not have a board listing the prices of the food that is on sale at his stall. Well, that’s another law altogether – not related to profiteering. This law gives the consumer a choice to look and compare prices before making a purchase or placing an order.
There is no law against profiteering. Period.
If there is any, then the ministry should first ask the hoteliers to justify why some of them charge RM40 for mamak mee – 10 times more than the average restaurant. Of course, patrons are paying for the ambience, décor and the service.
So, stop giving consumers false hopes. We have to accept that the price increases are going to hurt all of us who earn an honest living without backhanders, coffee money and other forms of inducement above and below the table.

26 costlier items once all price hikes implemented

At least 26 goods, services and commodities will see price jumps once the full chain of all price hikes is implemented, according to an Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) professor.

However, he did not list all the 26 items that he had identified.

While he understood the predicament the government was in, Amir said once there was a need to cover costs as a result of energy sources becoming expensive, the government no longer looked at the welfare of people.

Stung by criticisms, Putrajaya raps The Star for sensationalising minister’s comments
December 29, 2013
The Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry moved to head off more criticisms about price hikes today by ticking off The Star newspaper, saying “such sensationalisation of news and eye-catching headlines should not be at the expense of misinformation that may create the wrong perspective”.
The Star reported Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek as saying on Friday that the ministry had not received any complaints and this meant there was support for the price hikes. But the online version of the news report has been now been edited and carries a new headline.
“In the report published on 27th of December 2013 titled ‘No complaints proof that Malaysians support price hike’, we the ministry and on behalf of the Minister find that this is very misleading,” the ministry said in a Facebook posting today.
The report was referring to a slew of price hikes from January 1, including for toll rates and electricity tariffs that has led to complaints from manufacturers and consumers alike. Ice cube manufacturers have already said they would raise prices after the new year.
…
In The Star report, the minister was quoted as saying, “We haven’t received any complaints. People have not complained, which means there is support. We don’t control the price, the consumers control it.”
Hasan also urged businesses to be considerate in the report, saying “Please help the ministry and don’t raise prices unreasonably.”

Businesses to set thermostats higher to cope with electricity tariff hike
PETALING JAYA: It’s going to get warmer indoors in 2014 as shopping malls, tall buildings and offices raise temperatures to cut electricity costs.
The Malaysian Association for Shopping and Highrise Complex Management is advising its 400-odd members nationwide to set their air-conditioning at 23°C or 24°C.
Air conditioning, according to the association, takes up the largest share of energy – about 65% – in commercial buildings.
Its president H.C. Chan said most malls in the country are now too cold, with temperatures ranging from 21°C to 23°C.
“We can and should move up a few degrees especially now with mounting energy costs. The reality is that we need to be energy efficient and eliminate waste because electricity is our single, largest expenditure,” he added.

Stationery prices expected to go up
KUALA LUMPUR: Prices of stationery items are expected to go up by 20% to 30% within the first quarter of next year.
Industry players claimed that they were revising the prices, partly due to the increasing costs from the implementation of minimum wages and transport costs.
Other factors include the new electricity tariff rate, higher fuel price and the currency exchange rate between the ringgit and China renminbi, as most of the imported stationery items are from China.
The speculated increase in toll rates and rentals are also expected to contribute to the increase.
The stationery products include papers of all sorts, clips, staplers, pencils, pens, colour pencils, files, note books (school exercise note books and notepads), markers and board dusters.
Almost all these items are used in offices, schools, institutes of higher learning and homes.

School bus operators will impose a 40 percent surcharge on its fares from the upcoming school year next month, unless the government reveals new fares for the service by then.
The Union of School Bus Associations passed the motion at its annual general meeting yesterday after the Land Transport Commission (Spad), which controls the prices, failed to review the fares.
The move also came after a cut in diesel subsidies in September, which the union’s new president Amali Munif Rahmat says have left bus operators struggling to stay afloat or even stopping services altogether.
“The last fares announced by (Spad’s predecessor) the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) were in Aug 2009. The board revises it every three years or when there is a drastic increase in fuel prices.
“Now it has been five years without a fare revision despite several increases in fuel prices,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted yesterday.
Over the period, diesel prices had increased on three occasions, bringing the prices from RM1.70 per litre during the last fare revision to the current RM2.00 per litre.

Toll rate hike next year unavoidable, says Minister – Bernama

The toll rate hike next year is unavoidable as it is an express condition in the concession agreement between the government and highway concession companies, according to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar.
He said the toll rate should have been revised in 2011, as stated in the concession agreement.
“However, the rate was maintained, but the government had to fork out RM400 million in compensation from taxpayers’ money, which could have been used for other purposes.
“And now it’s time to fulfill the condition,” he told reporters after presenting prizes to winners of a colouring and drawing competition held in conjunction with the Parliament Building’s 50th anniversary celebration in Kuala Lumpur today.

“There will likely be a hike next year, but the quantum has not been fixed yet. We have to make sure to engage with all operators and to make a detailed study before deciding on any fare changes,” a Spad spokesperson said.

A review of bus and taxi fares is in progress and will be completed only by the first quarter of next year.
Spad has only just started considering fare hikes for the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and KTM’s train services.
This means it could take another three to six months before a decision is made.

KUALA BESUT, July 14 (Bernama) — Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Hasan Malek today urged to the people to switch to fish or meat to check the rise in the prices of chicken.
He said this step was necessary in view of irresponsible quarters taking advantage of the Aidilfitri season to hike prices of the popular item.
“This will serve as a lesson to them (irresponsible quarters ) that
profiteering does not pay.
“Use consumer power to boycott chicken and teach them a lesson… we can still celebrate Aidilfitri without chicken. Buy meat instead,” he said at a “Meet-the-People” session in Pulau Perhentian near here today.
Rise in chicken price, a case of foul play?
JULY 13, 2013
The Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry has not ruled out that the sharp rise in poultry prices was due to price manipulation by retailers as the farm price remains unchanged at RM5 per kg while the supply is adequate.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the retail prices shot up to between RM8.50 and RM9 per kg although the ministry has fixed the ceiling price at RM7.80 per kg.
He said the demand for chicken was normally 1.2 million birds a day but increased to 2.2 million to 2.4 million a day nationwide during Ramadan through Aidilfitri.
The government has opened applications for chicken import permits to address the problem and theoretically dumping will reduce the price of goods, he told a news conference to announce Tekun Nasional winning the Best Innovation in Financial Services award in Karlsruhe, Germany.
