KEDAH WANTS RM20M A YEAR FROM PENANG FOR TAKING WATER FROM THE MUDA RIVER.
NEW MENTRI BESAR of KEDAH, MUKHRIZ MAHATHIR, IS GOING TO PURSUE THE MATTER.
Former Kedah Mentri Besar, Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak, had demanded payment from Penang for drawing water from the Muda River.
It is believed that his own officials had indicated that Penang was willing to pay RM40m.
However, Lim Guan Eng, Chief Minister of Penang, stated that Penang woud not pay anything. The Sungai Muda flows through Penang, so technically the state was taking water from its own natural resources.

Lim Guan Eng wants to meet directly with Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir on the state’s intention to seek raw water payment from Penang, a proposal that Lim has strongly rejected.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng says the state is not interested in meeting with subordinate officers from the Kedah government to discuss the controversial water payment issues.
Lim said it is pointless to meet with the officers of Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir that Kedah plans to send to meet with their counterparts in Penang to discuss the matter.
He wants to meet directly with Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir on the state’s intention to seek raw water payment from Penang, a proposal that Lim has strongly rejected.
“Let’s meet at the highest level. There is no need for third parties,” Lim told a press conference today, lamenting that Mukhriz never even bothered to write to him on the matter.
He reiterated that he was willing to meet Mukhriz and treat him to Penang’s speciality, the nasi kandar, if the Kedah leader comes to Penang, adding, “and he can choose where to eat the nasi kandar”.
He was responding to report in the The Star today that Kedah state secretary Mohd Puat Mohd Ali and legal adviser Anas Ahmad Zakie have been instructed to meet their Penang counterparts to discuss the matter.

PETALING JAYA: Penang says it draws raw water from its side of the Muda River at no cost to Kedah, and therefore Kedah’s proposal to charge Penang for raw water is unjust.
Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng stressed that Kedah is not supplying raw water to the Penang Water Supply Authority (PBAPP).
“The Muda River flows through Penang naturally,” Lim said in a statement yesterday.
“We draw water from the river ourselves using our own water supply infrastructure, at our own cost. Since there is no cost on Kedah’s side, why should there be any charges?” he asked.
Lim said the Penang-Kedah case was unlike the Sungai Muar-Melaka Interbasin Water Transfer Scheme, where Johor incurs a cost for putting in place infrastructure to pump a steady supply of water to Melaka daily.
“Johor is pumping water to Melaka using man-made infrastructure at Johor’s cost. Penang is drawing water from Sungai Muda that flows naturally through Penang at our own cost. These are two totally different scenarios,” he said.

RM20M AT STAKE: Kedah’s offer to sell raw water up in the air, says exco member
ALOR STAR: THE Pas-led Kedah government is desperate to discuss its proposal to sell raw water to Penang.
State Water Supply and Water Resources Committee chairman Datuk Phahrolrazi Zawawi said further delays by the DAP-led Penang government “can complicate matters since the general election is around the corner”.
“I have not received any word from Penang about our proposal.
“The DAP-led state government has also yet to respond to our request for a meeting to discuss the matter,” he said when asked whether Penang had responded to Kedah’s suggestion.

Kedah, Penang have no consensus on raw water issue: Umno
ALOR SETAR, Nov 23 (Bernama) — Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s denial that the state government agreed to pay for Kedah’s water when the proceeds from the sale of water was entered in the 2013 Kedah State Budget, has proven the governments in the opposition pact were in disagreement.
State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah said, when tabling the budget recently, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak had said he could sell raw water to Penang, but had not yet sought the consent of the Penang Government.
He said, based on the experience of the Barisan Nasional (BN) previously, raw water source was a common right and did not incur any charges.
“Azizan said he had asked a state exco to meet and discuss with the Penang Government, and hoped Lim would agree,” he told reporters after opening a 2012 Red Waves Futsal Fiesta organised by the state Umno Youth here today.
