Where’s the crime in ‘Ubah Rocket Style’ video, DAP asks
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 — The DAP has defended its publicity video, “Ubah Rocket Style”, a parody of the Korean hit song “Gangnam Style”, insisting that no laws were broken despite the lodging of police reports against the party.
The opposition party’s video producers asked their detractors to show how “Ubah Rocket Style” had purportedly insulted the country’s leadership, even as the clip was criticised for its personal attacks that appeared to be aimed at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who is not a politician.
Teo Nie Ching, the DAP assistant publicity secretary, said that the party’s video clip is open to interpretation.
“We didn’t specify who are the characters in the video. If they think we are referring to Rosmah or Najib, it’s up for their interpretation,” Teo, who is also one of the video’s assistant producers, told The Malaysian Insider today.
Today, there were a few Twitter users who re-tweeted that “DAP sebar video mencemarkan imej Rosmah dan Najib…laporan Polis dibuat!” (DAP releases video tarnishing the image of Rosmah and Najib…police report lodged!).
……………
Teo suggested that it may be too much to expect authorities to act on every single video on the Internet, before saying there were similar videos such as those implying that Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim allegedly had an affair, and there should be no “double standards”.
The DAP had previously slammed its political foes for allegedly engaging in character assassination when allegations were hurled against Lim Guan Eng’s teenage son two years ago.
“In the video, we highlighted some of the scandals in our country,” Teo said, adding that these scandals existed before the “Ubah Rocket Style” video was produced.
The Serdang MP pointed out that since these scandals were not created by DAP, those who have lodged police reports were pointing at the wrong people.
Instead of pointing fingers at DAP, Teo said they should pay more attention to clarify scandals, which she said is a “better way to protect the reputation” of the country’s leaders.

PPP, two NGOs want cops to probe ‘Rocket Style’ video

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 — The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) today lodged a police report against DAP for releasing a video clip which tarnishes the image of the country leaders.
The NGOs — Ikatan Rakyat Insan Muslim Malaysia (IRIM) and the Malaysian Consumers Development Board (LPPM) — and PPP alleged that the video clip produced by the opposition parties featured several cartoon animations that resembled Malaysian leaders.
IRIM president Amir Amsaa Alla Pitchay said the video clip, which was uploaded by DAP on YouTube, insulted the leaders through comic characters doing the Gangnam Style dance.
“This is an insolent act which the people cannot accept and also an act which reflects their (opposition) arrogance,” he told reporters after lodging a report at the Dang Wangi Police Headquarters here.
He said action should be taken against those responsible for producing the video clip.

An air of festivity surrounded the official launch of the DAP’s catchy multi-language ‘Ubah-Rocket style’ video at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall last night.
The individual who caught the most attention was ‘Datin B’, who dressed up as Malaysia’s ‘First Lady’ aka Rosmah Mansor, the premier’s wife.
Datin B called herself ‘momma’ in a sketch depicting Rosmah’s allegedly expensive and extravagant taste in clothes and handbags, among other items. [Watch the sketch here]
Many present took photographs with Datin B, who featured prominently in the four-minute Ubah video.
DAP national publicity secretary Tony Pua, who produced the video, said the DAP got started after secretary-general Lim Guan Eng suggested last September that a video be made based on the ‘Oppa Gangnam’ style popularised by South Korean rapper Psy.

The DAP polls in Penang suggests that DAP delegates have yet to accept the concept of a Malaysian Malaysia which promotes a multi-racial leadership, said a veteran Malay leader.
Penang DAP committee member Zulkifli Mohd Noor, who got booted out at the recent polls, said it was different from BN, which seemed to have already accepted the concept although the latter brands itself in another name.
“I have sent a message that if DAP is serious in wanting a Malaysian Malaysia which has been accepted by BN, it must be shown here (in the central executive committee line-up),” said Zulkifli, who is a Penang municipal councillor.

The appointment of two Malays into the DAP’s central executive committee (CEC) is based on their abilities where they will play a role of attracting more from their community to join the party, said secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.
“We appoint people based on their ability, and we do not deny that it is a symbolic representation of the Malays into the party….Ariffin is a scholar and also a senator,” said Lim at a press conference today after the CEC line-up was announced.

As expected, the newly-minted DAP central executive committee has decided to retain Karpal Singh as its chairperson and Lim Guan Eng as secretary-general following the party polls yesterday.
Reflecting the wishes of its 1,826 delegates who effectively voted the same team of 20 CEC members with only three exceptions, the committee opted not to make drastic changes to its leadership as the party prepares for the coming 13th general election, which must be held in the next six months.

To ward off criticisms of being anti-Malay since none of the eight Malay candidates made it to the top 20, senator Ariffin Omar and Zairil Khir Johari, who is political secretary to Guan Eng, were also included in the powerful committee.
Also appointed are Jimmy Wong and Edwin Bosi (Sabah), John Brian Anthony (Sarawak), Leong Ngah Ngah (Pahang), V Sivakumar and Thomas Su (Perak).

Malays fail to make the cut for DAP leadership posts
GEORGE TOWN, Dec 15 – Despite its push to appear more inclusive, DAP’s party elections saw not a single Malay elected into its leadership line-up tonight.
…………….
One of the Malay veteran leaders, Ahmad Ton, who was elected into the CEC in 2008 with 448 votes only garnered 347 votes this time around.
Another veteran Malay leader, Zulkifli Mohd Noor, who was outspoken about the need for the delegates to vote in some Malay candidates into the CEC, only garnered 216 votes.

All eight Malay DAP leaders who contested for central executive committee (CEC) posts lost badly at 16th DAP Congress today.

Zulkifli Mohd Noor, one of the DAP Malay candidates said he fought for 25 years for the Malays to be elected as CEC members but failed.
“When we say ‘Malaysian Malaysia,’ we must represent all religions, all races… balance. The message I conveyed did not reached the grassroots. They are still choosing leaders based on race,” he told Bernama.

GEORGE TOWN (Dec 15, 2012): Looking to capitalise on the global phenomenon of Korean pop star Psy’s Gangnam Style, the DAP today unveiled its own political parody titled “Ubah Rocket Style” during the party’s 16th national congress here.
The video, which was shot at various locations in Malaysia and touches on topics like the rising cost of living, corruption and environmental concerns, received thunderous applause from the 2,600-odd delegates when it was screened.
It also takes on highly watched socio-political issues in the Malaysian landscape, including the Lynas’ controversial rare-earth plant, the National Feedlot Corporation scandal and the acquisition of military hardware.

DAP presented a Malaysian parody of the popular ‘Oppa Gangnam Style’ song today, raising various issues while calling for change.
Delegates at the party’s national congress laughed and cheered as the music video touched on issues such as lack of security from crime, corruption, abuse of power, and the Lynas Advanced Material Plant (LAMP).
The star of the song dubbed ‘Ubah Rocket Style’ was DAP’s mascot hornbill named Ubah.
Other familiar faces in the video included DAP secretary general Lim Guan Eng, assistant publicity chief Teo Nie Ching, Teratai assemblyperson Janice Lee, and a person impersonating the prime minister’s wife, Rosmah Mansor.
