More than 10,000 at Raub protest: Najib can’t even manage Pahang, what more M’sia?

Written by  Stan Lee, Malaysia Chronicle

More than 10,000 people began a march from the Raub sports complex in Pahang to the nearby Bukit Koman goldmine they alleged has been using cyanide to the detriment of their health.

The huge size of the crowd, which gathered spontaneously and voluntarily, signals the strength of public unhappiness at the manner in which Prime Minister Najib Razak has been accused of allowing hazardous industries to mushroom, even in his home state.

“The issue here is the use of cyanide and this complaint has been going on since 2007. There are now 2 major hotspots in Pahang that Naib must stand accountable for – the Lynas rare earth refinery and the Bukt Koman goldmine. If he cannot manage his own home state, no wonder the federal government and the economy are going to the dogs,” PKR MP for Kuantan Fuziah Salleh told Malaysia Chronicle.

They claim that the two so-called representatives (see photo left) were a security officer and a designer.

3.55pm – Rally organisers urge protesters to now march to the gold mine in Bukit Koman since Raub Australia Gold Mining Sdn Bhd failed to send any representatives to receive their protest note.

Previously, the police had announced that the company would send a representative to the rally to receive the note.

The representative was supposed to have arrived at 3.30pm.

NONE4.05pm – Now that many of the protesters have come out from the shade to join the march, it appears that there are about 10,000 people joining the march.

Raub district police chief Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman tried in vain to stop the crowd from marching but the massive crowd just slipped past him and his men.
………..
4.20pm – The police managed to intercept the crowd before they managed to reach the gold mine with representatives from the company in tow.

Raub district police chief Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman explained that the police wanted to fulfil its end of the agreement with the protest organisers in facilitating the handover of its protest note to the company representative.

He denied claims that the company refused to accept the note, but instead explained that their representatives were late.

Eventually, organising committee head Wong Kin Hoong handed over the document to the representatives.

Green rally underway in Raub
1:46PM Sep 2, 2012

The sleepy hollow of Raub, Pahang has become the latest hotbed of environmental activism as thousands gathered to oppose the use of cyanide at a nearby goldmine.

Residents of Kampung Baru Bukit Koman, who live adjacent to the goldmine, claim that the use of cyanide had badly affected their health but the government and the mining company – Raub Australia Gold Mining Sdn Bhd – has disputed this.

1.30pm – It is good weather here in Raub. At least 2,000 people are already here in Padang Milo donning the Ban Cyanide Committee’s trademark green T-shirt bearing the words Himpunan Hijau.
………
1.40pm – Pahang PKR and Kuantan-based activists who are campaigning against the Lynas rare-earth refinery were seen disembarking from 11 buses.
……….
1.45pm – Although protestors are mostly in a jovial mood, there are certain groups that are not too happy with the rally.

At least two banners promoting the event have been slashed while two banners that carry messages opposing the rally have been spotted.

“Oppose Himpunan Hijau Raub. Do not trouble the people of Raub trying to rest for the weekend,” wrote one banner purportedly placed by Persatuan Pemuda Pemudi Raub Bandar.

1.48pm – The crowd has grown to about 3,000 people and they are being entertained by activist Hishammuddin Rais, who is the emcee for the event. He leads the crowd in a rendition of Suara Rakyat under the scorching heat.
……….

2.11pm – The event is now officially underway after a prayer recital and the singing of Negaraku. They field is approximately 40 percent full.

2.16pm – The emcee has urged participants to sit down as chairperson of the organising committee Wong Kin Hoong addresses the crowd.

Family members of the late Teoh Beng Hock are also spotted among the crowd.

Police nod for Sunday’s anti-cyanide rally
  • Lee Way Loon
  • 10:17AM Aug 28, 2012

With less than a week to go for the ‘Himpunan Hijau Raub’ anti-cyanide demonstration, the police have finally given rally organisers permission to hold the protest at a football field in the central Pahang town.

NONEThe Ban Cyanide Committee and Raub district police chief (OCPD) Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman inked an agreement after a two-hour meeting yesterday (right).

The rally will be held at Padang Kompleks Sukan, Jalan Bukit Koman, Raub or Padang Milo from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday, Sept 2.

According to the committee adviser Tan Hui Chun, the participants are however banned from marching to the gold mine, which is owned by Raub Australian Gold Mine (RAGM) Sdn Bhd.
NONE“The police do not allow us to march but the OCPD said he has asked the mining company to send a representative to the rally and receive the memorandum from us. So we agreed to hold the rally at the said venue,” Tan told Malaysiakini.

In a statement released late yesterday, the organisers also said Wan Mohd Samsudin told the committee that the police would ensure the safety of all parties.

“We have tentatively agreed to the offer from the police, but if there is any change to this, we don’t rule out the possibility of leading the crowd to march to the gold mine,” the statement warns.

MCA ministers mocked at anti-cyanide pre-rally event
1:08PM Aug 27, 2012

The residents of Bukit Koman in Pahang have appointed Health Minister Liow Tiong Lai and Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen as their ‘ambassadors’ for the ‘Himpunan Hijau Raub’ anti-cyanide demonstration on Sept 2.

NONEDuring a pre-rally event at the Raub morning market yesterday, members of the Ban Cyanide Action Committee wore masks of the faces of Liow and Ng and carried posters highlighting the inconsistent stance of the two MCA leaders on the Bukit Koman gold mine issue.

Liow and Ng were said to have pledged their support for the anti-cyanide movement before the 2008 general election – but later reneged on their promises and ignored the plight and complaints of the residents.

NONEThe two ‘ambassadors’ called on the people to take part the Sept 2 rally and inked their signatures on the anti-cyanide banner, drawing cheers from the crowd.

‘Ng’, in her capacity as tourism minister, also encouraged Malaysians to visit Raub on the day of the rally.

………..

More than 2,000 signatures were collected from members of the public at the carnival-like event held by some 50 members of the anti-cyanide movement to boost support for their struggle. They also gave away some 1,000 green balloons during the three-hour programme.

Anti-cyanide rally: Plea for speedy nod for new venue
10:44AM Aug 25, 2012

After acceding to the police suggestion to shift its Sept 2 anti-cyanide demonstration to a football field, Ban Cyanide Action Committee had urged the relevant authorities not to delay approval for the new venue.

The new venue, dubbed Padang Milo, located behind Raub Lake Garden, was suggested by police following the Raub District Council’s rejection of the committee’s application to use Dataran Raub for its gathering on the grounds that it had already been booked for another activity.

NONEAccording to the committee’s statement yesterday, the police have agreed to facilitate the application with the local council.

“The proposed alternative venue is not far from Dataran Raub, only about half a kilometer away, hence it can be reached by walking.

“After a recce, the committee found that the venue is spacious and suitable for rallying.

“Although it is not completely satisfactory, the committee accepted it reluctantly in the bigger interest,” read the statement.

It said that arrangements will be made that day to direct the crowd unaware of the change in venue from Dataran Raub to Padang Milo.

“The authorities said they will process our application for the new venue according to the procedures and get back to us on the 27 (next Monday).”

Anti-cyanide rally to be at Raub football field
1:46PM Aug 23, 2012

An environmental group in Pahang has agreed to shift its Sept 2 anti-gold mine demonstration to a football field after its application to hold the rally at Dataran Raub was rejected by the Raub District Council.

The new venue, located behind Raub Lake Garden, was suggested by Raub district police chief Wan Mohd Samsudin Wan Osman during a meeting with the Ban Cyanide Action Committee yesterday.

According to a Sin Chew Daily report, committee chairperson Wong Kin Hoong (left) said the committee had no choice but to accept the police suggestion.

“The committee of ‘Raub Sept 2 Himpunan Hijau’ will meet with the district police chief again on Aug 27 to sign a rally agreement,” Wong is quoted as saying.

He said the committee has also agreed to the police request that participants do not bring children aged 15 and below to the rally.

Ban cyanide panel wants MCA to show support

PETALING JAYA (Aug 21, 2012): The Pahang Raub Ban Cyanide Action Committee (BCAC) said the planned Himpunan Hijau Raub on Sept 2 will proceed despite the Raub District Council rejecting the application to hold the gathering at Dataran Raub.

“We expect 20,000 people to turn up for this event,” said committee vice-chairman Sherly Hue.

The BCAC, in a statement to the media, urged MCA leaders to attend the gathering and stand by their promise to back the committee as they did during its (the committee’s) inception, and refuted allegations that the BCAC was being used by opposition parties.

“We have stated repeatedly that the BCAC was formed in 2006 with the blessing of MCA leaders, with MCA Wanita and MCA Youth vowing to back the BCAC during its inception. However MCA changed its stand and support the gold mining company one year later,” BCAC said in a statement today.

“Himpunan Hijau Raub is about protecting the environment, health and people’s lives, so we would like to call upon MCA leaders and ministers to set aside any political disagreement and work together towards stopping the use of cyanide in gold mining,” the committee said.

BCAC also refuted Raub MP and MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen’s accusation that Himpunan Hijau had been hijacked and politicised by opposition parties.

“Ng was expected to fulfil the responsibility of bringing up this issue in the parliament as the people’s elected representative, but she did not do so. The villagers welcome anyone willing to come forward and offer help, regardless of their political affiliations,” BCAC said.

Raub council says ‘no-go’ to Himpunan Hijau
12:52PM Aug 21, 2012

The Raub District Council has rejected an environmental group’s application to stage a demonstration at Dataran Raub against the Bukit Koman gold mine on September 2.

In a statement, the Ban Cyanide Action Committee said the council had responded to their application on August 17, stating that the Dataran Raub had already been booked for another activity.

“The committee is very dissatisfied with this response. Prior to fixing a date, we had already checked and found that there was no activity at the field on that day,” said committee chairperson Wong Kin Hoong.

Wong said the district council was thus violating the rights of its ratepayers by preventing them from using public facilities.

“This is also an insult to the prime minister’s efforts to promote transparency and reforms,” he said.

Wong said the committee strongly condemns the council for denying the public their right to freedom to assembly which is safeguarded under the Federal Constitution and the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Dialogue sought

The committee replied the council’s notice the same day that it received it, seeking details of the said activity at Dataran Raub and also requested a dialogue with the council.
