Grant Wahl, a longtime and respected soccer journalist who died suddenly Friday at the World Cup in Qatar, wasn’t sleeping well in the days leading up to his death, his agent, Tim Scanlan, told the New York Times.

“I asked him if he tried melatonin or anything like,” Scanlan told the paper. “He said, ‘I just need to like relax for a bit.’”

On his podcast, “Futbol with Grant Wahl,” on Thursday, the 49-year-old Wahl also noted that he’d been struggling physically after 17 straight days of games.

Finally, he said, he took two days off from his extensive coverage of the month-long tournament, which is being played in a reduced timeframe with 64 matches over 29 days across eight venues and five cities.

“My body told me, even after the U.S. went out, dude you are not sleeping enough and it rebelled on me,” Wahl said on the podcast. “So I’ve had a case of bronchitis this week. I’ve been to the medical clinic at the media center twice now including today [Thursday]. I’m feeling better today. I basically canceled everything on this Thursday that I had and napped.

Journalist Grant Wahl Said He ‘Had a Case of Bronchitis’ Before His Death: ‘Pressure and Discomfort’

Wahl collapsed during a match in Qatar on Friday and died at age 48, after “three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work”

Grant Wahl discussed coming down with bronchitis before his death in Qatar on Friday.

The famed sports journalist was covering the FIFA World Cup in Doha, specifically, a match between Argentina and Netherlands, when he collapsed Friday. His cause of death remains unknown, although his brother Eric Wahl has said he suspects it was the result of foul play.

Just a day before, on his Thursday episode of his Fútbol with Grant Wahl podcast, as ESPN points out, the host explained that he hadn’t been feeling his best covering recent matches.

“My body told me, even after the U.S. went out, ‘Dude, you are not sleeping enough,’ and it rebelled on me. So I’ve had a case of bronchitis this week,” he said. “I’ve been to the medical clinic at the media center twice now, including today. I’m feeling better today, I basically canceled everything on this Thursday, that I had, and napped.”
.

Similarly, on his Substack, Wahl explained that his body “finally broke down on me,” and again detailed the sickness.

“Three weeks of little sleep, high stress and lots of work can do that to you,” he wrote. “What had been a cold over the last 10 days turned into something more severe on the night of the USA-Netherlands game, and I could feel my upper chest take on a new level of pressure and discomfort. I didn’t have Covid (I test regularly here), but I went into the medical clinic at the main media center today, and they said I probably have bronchitis. They gave me a course of antibiotics and some heavy-duty cough syrup, and I’m already feeling a bit better just a few hours later. But still: No bueno.”

#Ivermectin: US District Judge, Jeffrey Vincent Brown, dismisses the suit brought against the FDA by Robert L Apter, Mary Talley Bowden and Paul E Marik

Judge Rules on Lawsuit Against FDA Over Ivermectin

By Zachary Stieber

December 6, 2022Updated: December 6, 2022

A federal judge on Dec. 6 agreed to throw out a lawsuit that was filed against the U.S. government over its repeated exhortations not to take ivermectin against COVID-19.

Plaintiffs, three doctors, said the FDA violated the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by its warnings against using ivermectin to treat COVID-19.

But the law does not support their case, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey Brown, a Trump appointee, said in a 20-page ruling.

“First, while § 396 limits the FDA’s powers as applied to medical devices, it does not do so in the context of drugs. As there is no statute limiting the FDA’s actions here, it cannot have acted outside of any statutory limitations,” he said. “Further, it cannot be said that the FDA had no colorable basis of authority. The FDA is charged by Congress with protecting public health and ensuring that regulated medical products are safe and effective, among other things.

“The plaintiffs do not dispute that the FDA has the authority, generally, to make public statements in-line with these purposes. Although the FDA could have, and perhaps should have, been more prudent in their communications, they had at least a colorable basis in authority—and there is no statute saying otherwise,” he added.

The doctors had pointed to six FDA statements, including a post on social media that said, “You are not a horse” and told people to “stop” taking ivermectin for COVID-19.

They had said the statements amounted to a “final agency action,” which could trigger relief under the Administrative Procedure Act.

Brown disagreed, saying there was “no indication the FDA has adopted a legal position, no indication of any future liability on non-complying parties, and no establishment of safe harbors.

“While the plaintiffs allege that the FDA’s statements have incited third parties to investigate and fire the plaintiffs, the FDA’s statements do not state the FDA’s view of the law or create civil or criminal liability for noncompliance,” he added.

He ruled in favor of the government’s claim of sovereign immunity. The government can only be sued with its consent, and plaintiffs did not meet the exceptions they cited, according to the judge.

“We are conferring with our clients regarding an appeal to U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. The improper actions of government agencies like the FDA leave many open legal questions that deserve a full public airing,” Boyden Gray, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, told The Epoch Times in an emailed statement.

The FDA declined to comment.
