Lim Kit Siang: A declaration of war by Muhyiddin

..

The real power behind the Opposition Leader has spoken: it’s a declaration of war as Muhyiddin has completely ignored the Yang di Pertuan Agong’s wishes that he will not swear in another Prime Minister before his five-year reign ends next January

(Versi BM)

The real power behind the Parliamentary Opposition Leader has spoken — it’s a declaration of war as the the Bersatu President Muhyiddin Yassin has completely ignored the 16th Yang di Pertuan Agong’s wishes that he will not have to swear in another Prime Minister before his five-year reign ends next January.

Yesterday, I criticised the Opposition Leader Hamzah Zainudin for failing the Agong’s test to ensure political stability for the next five years to allow the country to unite a very polarised plural nation, and to reset and return to the original nation-building principles to become a first-rate world-class nation.

I said that Hamzah failed both the minimum test, to give an undertaking that Anwar Ibrahim would be the last Prime Minister the 16th Yang di Pertuan Agong will swear in before the end of his five-year reign next January, and the maximum test, an undertaking that there would be no change of Prime Minister for the next five years, and that Anwar Ibrahim will be able to serve the full five-year term as the 10th Prime Minister.

Now the reason for Hamzah failing both the minimum and maximum tests is clear — for Muhyiddin’s speech was a declaration of war indicating that he will not be restrained by the Yang di Pertuan Agong’s Royal Address at the Opening of the 15th Parliament on Monday from enacting another Sheraton Move political conspiracy to usher in a “backdoor” Prime Minister again.

In his jingoistic speech, Muhyiddin was confident of the “green wave” phenomenon, echoing Perikantan Nasional (PN) leaders who said PN could capture Selangor state government, and that PN has a 50-50 chance to capture Negeri Sembilan in the state general elections of Penang, Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu to be held in June or July this year.

One PN leader even said PN could capture 33 out of 36 state assembly constituencies in Kedah in the upcoming state general election, apart from Kota Darul Aman, Bakar Arang, and Sidam, and that the PN would have a clean sweep of all the seats in Kelantan and Terengganu.

All that is necessary to prove that there is no such thing as an irresistible “green tide” phenomenon to transform Malaysia into a theocratic state is to prove five things:

  1. That PN could not capture the Selangor state government;
  2. That PN could not capture the Negeri Sembilan State government;
  3. That the Pakatan Harapan, and Barisan Nasional coalitions which formed the Anwar unity government could win more than three state assembly seats in Kedah;
  4. Break the PN monopoly of all seats in Kelantan;
  5. Break the PN monopoly of all seats in Terengganu.

It is clear from Muhyiddin’s speech in Parliament yesterday, PN wants the six state general elections to be a mini-Parliamentary election, where an overwhelming PN victory will be the basis for another Sheraton Move political conspiracy to topple Anwar Ibrahim as the 10th Prime Minister.

Muhyiddin wants the 16th Yang di Pertuan Agong to work with five Prime Ministers in five years from 2019 to 2024 but the decision will be in the hands of the voters in six states in their general elections in June or July and not in Muhyiddin’s hands.

Baby and Maternal Outcomes Following SARS-CoV-2 Infection and COVID-19 Vaccination During Pregnancy: A National Population-Based Matched Cohort Study by Laura Lindsay, Clara Calvert, Ting Shi, Jade Carruthers, Cheryl Denny, Jack Donaghy, Lisa EM Hopcroft, Leanne Hopkins, Anna Goulding, Terry McLaughlin, Emily Moore, Bob Taylor, Krishnan Bhaskaran, Srinivasa Vittal Katikireddi, Ronan McCabe, Colin McCowan, Colin Simpson, Chris Robertson, Aziz Sheikh, Rachael Wood, Sarah J. Stock :: SSRN

Abstract

Background: Understanding the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy on maternal and perinatal outcomes informs clinical decision-making.

Methods: We undertook a national, population-based, matched cohort study to investigate associations between SARS-CoV-2 infection and, separately, COVID-19 vaccination just before or during pregnancy and the risk of adverse baby and maternal outcomes among women in Scotland with a singleton pregnancy ending at ≥20 weeks gestation. Baby outcomes examined were stillbirth, neonatal death, extended perinatal mortality, preterm birth (overall, spontaneous, and provider-initiated), small-for-gestational age, and low Apgar score. Maternal outcomes were admission to critical care or death, venous thromboembolism, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and pregnancy-related bleeding. Conditional logistic regression models were used to derive odds ratios adjusted for socio-demographic and clinical characteristics (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs).

Findings: Our infection analyses of 4,074 women with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection matched on maternal age, season of conception, and gestational age at infection/matching to 12,222 uninfected controls, found that infection was associated with an increased risk of preterm (aOR=1·36, 95% CI 1·16-1·59) and very preterm birth (aOR=1·90, 95% CI 1·20-3·02), maternal admission to critical care or death (aOR=1·72, 95% CI 1·39-2·12), and venous thromboembolism (aOR=2·53, 95% CI 1·47-4·35).  Our vaccination analyses found no evidence of increased risk for any baby or maternal outcomes following vaccination.InterpretationSARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is associated with adverse baby and maternal outcomes, but COVID-19 vaccination is not. COVID-19 vaccination remains the safest way for pregnant women to protect themselves and their babies against SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Russian businessmen keep dying. No one knows why.

Three theories for a mysterious string of deaths in Putin’s Russia.

By Cameron Peters@jcameronpeters Oct 14, 2022, 7:00am EDT

It’s a rough year to be a high-profile Russian: After nearly eight months of war in Ukraine, the Russian military is reeling and on its back foot; sanctions continue to squeeze the country’s economy and elite— and at least 15 Russian businessmen and executives have died in apparent accidents or by suicide, including a number of Putin allies.

The victims range from an executive with Gazprom, a major state-owned oil company, to the managing director of a state-run development corporation. The causes of death range from unremarkable — a stroke, for example — to lurid, such as death by toad poison in a shaman’s basement.

Combined, the sheer number of deaths, as well as the prominence of the dead and a long history of suspicious demises in Putin’s Russia, have raised questions about whether something other than ordinary bad luck is at fault.
.

So what really happened?

The short answer is we don’t know — the deaths are strange on their own and outright suspicious as a cluster, but the throughline, if there is one, remains a mystery. That being said, there are a few possible explanations.

Suicide and accident — really

According to the experts I spoke with, the sheer volume of accidental deaths and suicides so far is enough to mean that this is unlikely to be the true explanation in every case. It’s not impossible, however;sometimes a suicide is just a suicide and an accident is just an accident, no matter how odd.
.

The long arm of the Kremlin

One of the most dramatic and often-speculated-about explanations is that the deaths are really killings — carried out at the order of the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

As Bill Browder, a onetime investor in Russia turned Kremlin critic, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) this month, “when people of all the same industry die that way, it looks to me like what I would call an epidemic of murder.”

According to ABC’s Samantha Hawley and Flint Duxfield, Browder “told the ABC News Daily podcast he had little doubt the deaths of the Russian oligarchs — predominantly from the oil and gas sector — have come at the orders of the Kremlin.”
.

Internal business pressures turned deadly

That leaves a third theory, one that both Taylor and Rutland indicate is far more likely than either a Kremlin-directed campaign of assassinations or a spate of genuine accidents and suicides.

Specifically, the recent run of deaths among Russia’s business elite could well be disguised killings — but the killings may be a product of Russia’s tangled political and economic structures, which are newly under pressure from Russia’s war in Ukraine, more than of any specific, overarching agenda.

According to Taylor, the deaths could have more to do with “shady business, attempt to cover tracks, attempt to wipe out a competitor, trying to maybe get rid of someone who’s inconvenient at a time when there’s a lot of pressure on state-affiliated companies, especially in the oil and gas sector, but also in the defense sector.”

Markus agrees, noting in an email that “there are competing influential clans” within the Russian state “that span state institutions and private or state-owned firms.”
.

Significantly, both Taylor and Rutland emphasize that there’s still a great deal of uncertainty around the deaths. However, under the third and, according to them, more likely theory, continued pressure on Russia’s economy could well accelerate the trend.

Violence as a way of doing business has been “deeply normalized going back to the 1990s,” Rutland said. “And so as the regime enters what could be its death throes, or certainly it’s under huge pressure, you can imagine that there’s gonna be this — well, it’s not yet a bloodbath, but you can imagine that the faction fighting will get even more desperate.”

There are no satisfying answers to be had, at least for now. Recent history supports the idea that such deaths are something Putin would be fully capable of, but he lacks a clear motive that connects them all; as some close Russia watchers have observed, Russia’s cutthroat business culture is at least equally likely to be culpable as a repressive Kremlin. In both cases, there’s a distinct dearth of evidence — but the speculation only underscores the overlapping brutality of Russian business and Putin’s regime.
