Chinese Communist Party Support: A Tale of Dwindling Numbers

In a startling revelation, a survey orchestrated by researchers from the University of Southern California and Stanford University’s Hoover Institution hints at a lesser public support for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) than previously anticipated. With stringent constraints on foreign survey firms and the probability of self-censorship among Chinese respondents, the actual public sentiment in China has often been a tough nut to crack.
.
Historically, opinion surveys, including those conducted by Harvard University between 2003 and 2016, have consistently indicated high approval ratings for the CCP. The satisfaction rate reported in the last survey exceeded 90%. However, the landscape of public opinion in China may not be as uniform as these figures suggest.
.
The novel study by USC and Stanford’s Hoover Institution employed a ‘list experiment’ method, thus providing respondents with the cloak of anonymity, thereby mitigating the fear of potential reprisal. The results painted a different picture than the one commonly portrayed. The study discovered that support for the CCP fluctuated between 50% and 70% during the survey period in June and November 2020.
.
Interestingly, nearly half of the respondents disagreed with the assertion that China’s system of government is the best. A significant proportion, nearly 40%, expressed apprehension about potential consequences for protesting against the state. In terms of support for Xi Jinping’s leadership, the estimate was pegged between 65% and 70%. The researchers speculate that these numbers might have dwindled further, subsequent to the discontent over Xi’s ‘zero-covid’ policy. The constant testing and lockdowns have been a source of widespread frustration.
