Loke: No need for senior citizens to undergo eye, medical tests to renew driver’s licence next year
By Jeremy Veno on July 20, 2023, Thursday at 5:44 PM
KUCHING (July 20): Federal Minister of Transport Anthony Loke said there is no requirement at the moment for those above 65 years old to undergo eye tests and medical evaluation to renew their driver’s licence in 2024.
He was responding to a message which is circulating on WhatsApp claiming that senior citizens would need to undergo such checks to renew their driver’s licence next year.
“No such requirements by the JPJ (Road Transport Department),” said Loke in a text message to The Borneo Post.
In the viralled message, it was explained in detail on how to extend the validity of a driver’s licence at the ‘Warga Emas’ counter at the JPJ office.
It is believed that the message is to remind anyone above 65 years old to quickly extend their driver’s licence now instead of waiting for next year when the ‘new requirements’ of medical checks kick in.
The message also explained the payment details and which counter to visit at the JPJ office to complete the extension validity of a driver’s licence.

Do the Malaysian police want to take away our driver’s licence just because they think we are too old?

Bernama reported that RMP was suggesting to the government to limit the issuing of driving licence to senior citizens because, among the factors contributing to accidents was the fact that senior citizens are driving when they are not completely healthy. Senior citizens should undergo a health check-up as well as getting a doctor’s letter earlier to confirm they are fit to drive.

KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 25): The proposal to limit the issuing of driving licence to senior citizens has not yet been discussed in detail.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the proposal was raised by Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Datuk Azisman Alias on Friday.
He said the call was his personal suggestion at JSPT level only and it has not been discussed in detail.
“JSPT, a department of the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) involved in ensuring road safety has always looked at various aspects to improve road safety in the interest of the people.
“Any introduction of new methods would only be implemented after undergoing the study process as well as being decided by all interested parties,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

65 and over..needs their Driving License taken off the road. They are too old to drive. It’s their health that is risky and avoid accidents that could even kill a dog.
