Suicides in Singapore rose nearly 26 percent last year to their highest level in more than two decades, reflecting the “unseen mental distress” in the city-state, according to a local NGO.
The suicide rates among young people aged 10-29 and elderly people aged 70-79 were particularly concerning, the prevention center Samaritans of Singapore said in its annual press release containing statistics on the issue.

3. 317 of the cases last year involved men, with 159 involving women. “Globally male suicide deaths have consistently outnumbered female suicide deaths. Research shows there are several potential factors that can contribute to the higher rate. including societal expectations.”
4. “The unprecedented rise in suicide numbers in Singapore is profoundly heartbreaking”. “This increase paints a picture of the unseen mental distress permeating our society, especially amongst our youths and the elderly,” says senior consultant Dr Jared Ng.
