Will PH retain Penang in the coming state election? Yes

..

There are 40 seats in the Penang state assembly.

Currently, PH has 33 seats, BN 2, PAS 1 and Vacated 4 (frogs who lost their seats).
A simple majority is 21.

*Muhyiddin predicts that PN could win at least 15 seats and as many as 20; and 20 would open up the possibility of gaining 1 from PH-BN, somehow? Muhyiddin needs to understand that frogs get slaughtered in the Penang state assembly.

He thinks that the Green Wave will help PN achieve his target of 15 – 20.

*My take? No, Penang will stay with PH, helped by BN.

PH will win at least 30 seats(not counting the 4 vacated seats). BN will retain their 2 seats.

*Final result: The PH-BN coalition wins Penang, 32 – 8; perhaps 35 – 5.

Muhyiddin confident PN can win ‘nearly 20’ seats in Penang state polls

Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin expressed confidence that the coalition can win “nearly 20” state seats to garner a simple majority in the 40-seat Penang state legislative assembly.

“We need only 21 (seats) to do this. Now, it’s almost 20.

“So, if we want to win, we just need a bit more effort. Just one more percent of your power,” Free Malaysia Today reported the Bersatu president saying at the PN convention at the state Gerakan headquarters in George Town today.

Commenting further, Muhyiddin said PN’s win at the upcoming six-state elections could ease the coalition’s takeover of the federal government.
.

At the same event, state PN Youth chief Zuzalee Ariffin claimed that 55 percent of the Malays in Penang backed the coalition, while only 28 percent and 15 percent backed BN and Harapan, respectively.

He further claimed that since the majority of Chinese and Indians in the state-supported Harapan, PN has to work harder to cause a vote swing in their favour.

The meaning of Muhyiddin’s claim that PN confident it can win “nearly 20 seats” in Penang state polls

I want to discuss the significance of the statement earlier today of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin that he was confident that the PN coalition could win “nearly 20” state assembly seats to garner a simple majority in the 40-seat Penang State Assembly.

He said at the PN convention at the state Gerakan state headquarters in Penang:

“We need only 21 (seats) to do this. Now, it’s almost 20.

“So, if we want to win, we just need a bit more effort. Just one more percent of your power.”

Muhyiddin said PN’s win at the upcoming six-state elections could ease the coalition’s takeover of the federal government.

Muhyiddin’s statement has the following implications for the six state general elections expected in August:

  1. A hung Parliament in Penang State Assembly if not a new Chief Minister and a PN state government in Penang;
  2. PN captures Selangor State Government;
  3. PN captures Negeri Sembilan State Government;
  4. A clean sweep for PN in Kelantan and Terengganu state general elections;
  5. An overwhelming PN victory in Kedah state general election where the Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional coalition could win at most three State Assembly seats; and
  6. The toppling of the Anwar unity government after nine months and the return of political instability and national disunity, which will drive away foreign investors.

.
Victories for PN in the six states in August will confirm Malaysia in the trajectory of decline towards a divided, failed, and rogue state for Malaysia in the coming decades.

What Malaysia needs is the very opposite.

Malaysia, regardless of race, religion or region, should unite with one common objective — to make Malaysia world champions again and be the role model to the world of inter-ethnic, inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-civilisational dialogue, understanding, tolerance, and harmony.

Malaysian voters in the six states in August, whether Malays, Chinese, Indians or Muslims, Buddhists, Christians or Hindus, should not fall for the PN siren call for a divided, failed, and rogue future for Malaysia, but should unite for Malaysians to become world champions again and to be a role model to the world of inter-ethnic, inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-civilisational dialogue, understanding, tolerance, and harmony.

The PN politicians are thinking of their own future, but Malaysian voters, both Muslim and non-Muslims, in the six state general elections in August, must think of the future of their state and the nation, and that of their children and children’s children.

To be world champions again and to be the role model to the world of inter-ethnic, inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-civilisational dialogue, understanding, tolerance and harmony, all races, religions, and regions must unite with one common national goal.

We must ensure that the coalition that formed the Anwar Unity Government retain the three State Governments with over two-thirds majority, while making advances in Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, by winning more than three seats in Kedah and “break the egg” in Kelantan and Terengganu.

This is why the Yang di Pertuan Agong advised all Malaysians to maintain political stability and restore national unity which are the two prerequisites for Malaysia to be world champions again and to be a role model to the world of inter-ethnic, inter-religious, inter-cultural and inter-civilisation dialogue, understanding, tolerance, and harmony.
.

Malaysians, regardless of race, religion or region, must not waste this opportunity for a national reset and return to the original nation-building principles for a plural Malaysia — for such an opportunity is unlikely to present itself for a second time.

PN could win 14 Malay-majority seats in Penang

However, Perikatan Nasional is unlikely to win control of the state government.

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional (PN) is in a strong position to capture 14 of the 15 Malay-majority state seats in Penang if voting trends from the 15th general election (GE15) are an indication of things to come.

However, the coalition is unlikely to wrest control of the state government from Pakatan Harapan (PH) as it lacks support from non-Malays who make up the majority (62%-98%) of voters in 25 of the 40 seats in Penang.

One Malay-majority seat which could be difficult for the opposition coalition to win is Batu Maung, where Malays constitute 54% of voters. In the other 14 Malay-majority seats, the community makes up more than 60% of the electorate.

PN’s rise in Penang

In GE15, PN wrested Kepala Batas and Tasek Gelugor from Barisan Nasional (BN), and defeated PH in Permatang Pauh, a seat synonymous with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s family.

There are nine Malay-majority state seats within these constituencies.

Election Commission (EC) data shows that PN won the lion’s share of support from first-time voters, while PH lost votes overall compared with their performance in the previous general election (GE14) in 2018. For the most part, the BN vote share also saw a reduction.

In Permatang Pauh, for example, PN component PAS won 37,600 votes – an increase of 23,200 votes from the 14,400 the party won in GE14. In comparison, BN lost 2,895 votes and PH lost 3,168 votes.

In Tasek Gelugor, Bersatu’s Wan Saiful Wan Jan garnered 16,225 new votes while BN only managed to win 317 new votes compared with GE14. PH saw its vote share reduced by 1,892 votes.

The other five Malay-majority state seats in Penang are in the Batu Kawan and Balik Pulau parliamentary constituencies.

In Balik Pulau, PH’s majority was slashed from 6,464 to 1,582. PN, while losing, increased its vote share from 5,298 to 22,892.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s assertion that Perikatan Nasional (PN) will wrest Penang in the next state election is “mere propaganda”, according to Pakatan Harapan (PH) secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He was responding to the former prime minister’s remarks in George Town yesterday that 80 per cent of voters in the country, including PH-led states like Penang and Selangor, were now in favour of PN after GE15 last November.

“There is nothing wrong to harbour a desire [to win] like what Muhyiddin is doing but Muhyiddin himself knows that his statement is mere propaganda that even he does not believe in, yet he wants the people to,” Saifuddin was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini in a news report published today.

Saifuddin Nasution, who is also home minister and Pulau Jerejak assemblyman, told the news portal that Muhyiddin’s use of GE15 as a yardstick for making those claims was too simplistic and ignored the dissension within PN component parties PAS and Gerakan.

Gerakan deputy president Oh Teong Keong who is also its Penang chief is known to have criticised PAS election director and its Kedah MB Datuk Seri Sanusi Md Noor for questioning Penang’s sovereignty.

Oh has more recently spoken out against another PAS lawmaker, Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Noor, and demanded the latter apologise to the nursing fraternity for saying their uniform was too tight and not Shariah compliant.
