16 summons against convoy participants blocking traffic

BATU KAWAN – A total of 16 summonses were issued against a group of car drivers who were in a convoy that blocked traffic on the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge (JSAHMS) on June 9.

Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Chief, Superintendent Lee Chong Chern said, acting on information, he had detected all the drivers staying at a hotel in Batu Ferringhi.

“Investigating officers went to the hotel yesterday at about 2.12pm before asking all the drivers involved to come to the Seberang Perai Selatan District Police Headquarters for further action.

“Following that, a total of 12 drivers appeared today and we issued 16 summonses against all of them.

|”12 summonses were issued for the offense of obstructing traffic while the other four were issued for the offense of fancy registration number,” he said when contacted by MalaysiaGazette.

It is understood that those sued are local and Singaporeans. Yesterday, a 2.50-minute video recording went viral on TikTok showing more than 10 vehicles in a convoy in three rows even though JSAHMS only has two lanes.

BMW Car Club S’pore Apologises After Getting Condemned for Blocking Penang Bridge With Convoy

Case in point, the BMW Car Club Singapore is now coming under fire for taking up the entire Penang Bridge with their convoy.

The We are Malaysians Facebook page recently shared a video of the convoy, where the car club can clearly be seen taking up not just the 2 lanes on the bridge, but also the emergency lane.

We are Malaysians wrote, “BMW Car Club Singapore, Mega Meet at Penang. Blocking the whole bridge, causing traffic jam of 1 hour plus plus.”

The Seberang Perai Selatan Police Headquarters shared in a statement that they have summoned the group.

“The police have received a report on this incident and an investigation paper has been opened under the Traffic Act 1959 under Section 16(1) LN 166/59 for obstruction of traffic. On June 11, 2023, at 12:10am, all the drivers involved were present at the Seberang Perai Selatan Police Headquarters and have been summoned,” they informed.

The BMW Car Club Singapore has also apologised for their actions.

Taking to their Facebook page, they wrote, “We, BMW Car Club Singapore are aware of some viral videos which consists of our Penang Drive lately. We sincerely apologise and acknowledge a mistake that was made on our part and to reassure everyone of our unwavering commitment to cooperate with the local authorities.”

“We have taken full responsibility for the recent oversight by working closely with the local authorities as soon as we heard of the news. Rest assured that we have rectified the situation and the investigation is now closed.”
