New from us in @LancetRH_Europe. In this study, co-first authored by me and Peter, we estimated the relative vaccine effectiveness (VE) of a 4th dose of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine vs. a 3rd dose against all-cause mortality in the oldest and frailest people. https://t.co/iIVcdM3pDk

Additionally, VE was higher when compared to 3rd dose recipients in which more than 4 months has passed since vaccination, thus indicative of some waning protection from the 3rd dose.

Taken together, the results of the study suggest that the 4th dose offers additional benefits on top of the 3rd dose among the oldest and frailest. However, the timing of vaccination appears important, and henceforth, one might discuss whether new/updated vaccines are warranted.

"These findings suggest that a fourth dose may prevent premature mortality in the oldest and frailest even after the emergence of the Omicron variant, although the timing of vaccination seems to be important with respect to the slight waning observed after two months." pic.twitter.com/m8grvkglgp
