A post shared on Facebook does not show a photograph of a young Angela Merkel, the current Chancellor of Germany, posing with Adolf Hitler.

Mrs Merkel was born in 1954. Hitler killed himself nine years earlier in 1945. And the photo purportedly showing the two together appears to come from a photo book published in 1937.

Fact check: German Chancellor Angela Merkel is not the daughter of Hitler nor the controller of the US Democratic Party

A claim that is circulating in social media groups used by conspiracy theorists alleges that the German Chancellor Angela Merkel is the daughter of Adolf Hitler. This claim is false.

A version of the claim can be seen (here). The post reads: “This woman was controlling the Democratic Party from Germany and she’s the daughter of Hitler” above a photo of Angela Merkel. Iterations of this claim have repeatedly surfaced on social media (here , here , here, here) with some versions claiming a photo shows Hitler with a young Angela Merkel (here). The photo in these posts is attributed to Hitler’s personal photographer Heinrich Hoffmann and features an unidentified girl (here) .

Adolf Hitler died on April 30, 1945 (here). Angela Merkel was born on July 17, 1954 and is the daughter of Horst Kasner, a pastor in the Protestant Church (here).

The claim in the Facebook post quoted above that Angela Merkel controls the [US] Democratic Party is not supported by any evidence.

The claim: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is the grandson of David Rockefeller and actually named Jacob Greenberg

Over its short history, Facebook has seen its fair share of scandals. From Cambridge Analytica to advertising boycotts, many qualms with the social network are based on controversial yet real policies. But some conspiracy theories that take issue with the very platform on which they spread have no merit.

“Did you know that Mark Zuckerberg’s real name is Jacob Greenberg? And he is the grandson of David Rockefeller. Zuckerberg in German is ‘Sugar Mountain,’ their clandestine word for ‘Facebook’ no doubt: a mountain of information from which they can extract billions. The Rothschilds own nearly 10% of all Facebook shares, & FB was funded with $500,000,000 USD from a CIA owned bank, which is not a secret,” claims a meme Jade Ryan posted on Facebook June 18.

Many commenters were quick to debunk the claim, which has circulated for years.

“This one is false. They are not related at all,” wrote Jordan McQueen.

“Owning shares of a company doesn’t mean anything really if you know anything about investing,” commented Chuck Polanco.

Ryan has yet to respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

A joke that’s spiraled into a conspiracy theory

In March 2011, satirical outlet The Onion published a video claiming that Facebook was run by the CIA.

“After years of secretly monitoring the public, we were astounded so many people would willingly publicize where they live, their religious and political views, an alphabetized list of all their friends, personal email addresses, phone numbers, hundreds of photos of themselves and even status updates about what they were doing moment to moment. It is truly a dream come true for the C.I.A.” quipped Onion writer Christopher Sartinsky.

The Onion called Zuckerberg a CIA agent that runs Facebook’s “day-to-day operations” for the agency. They also joked that Zuckerberg’s code name was “The Overlord.”

Despite the story’s innately satirical tone, many social media users took the joke literally and urged their followers not to trust Facebook.
