The Chinese Foreign Ministry and the Xinjiang government did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but Zenz and ASPI have come under increasing attack from Beijing.

Birth rates had already fallen by 51% between 2015 and 2018 in southern Xinjiang.

In 2019, they fell by a further 47% in this sample of 31 ethnic minority counties with available data.
