The accident was believed to have been caused by the car hitting the wall of the tunnel, causing part of the train to be disformed.

Update: unfortunately, this is not the first time that a similar accident happened near the east coast stretch of #Taiwan's railroad. In 2018, another train of the same model also had a serious derailment near Yilan, causing 18 deaths and 190 passengers injured.
