KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 — Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo asserted today that he will not allow any petitions obstruct him from doing his ministerial duties.

Referring to an online petition demanding that he resign as minister after his criticism of monopoly service provider Telekom Malaysia (TM) Bhd, the minister said the petitioners are free to initiate it.

“My advice to all of them and the telecommunication companies is this: Improve yourselves and all Malaysians will support you,” he said to reporters at the Dewan Rakyat here.

Gobind said it is his duty as a minister holding the communications portfolio to question and try to improve things, and to find ways in which that can be done.

When told that the petition’s creator held him responsible for negatively impacting TM’s share price, he said there were numerous other reasons for that.

“How can you blame me? Are you saying to me there are no other reasons?” Gobind said, referring to the share price fall.

“Let us be realistic. At the end of the day, if you look at the pricing, it has gone down even for other telcos. But they also reported an increase [in subscribers] and other benefits as well.”

He acknowledged concerns about TM’s share price, but said it did not mean he, as a minister, cannot ask questions or speak up on the matter.

Gobind directed TM to reduce its broadband subscription prices and improve speeds for consumers shortly after being appointed minister and in accordance with Pakatan Harapan’s election manifesto.

AN online petition calling for Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo to be replaced has gathered more than 10,000 signatures over alleged claims of bias against Telekom Malaysia (TM).

The petition, which is being shared widely on social media by TM staff and those who said they are concerned for its employees and shareholders, notes that TM’s share price has dropped ever since he became a minister after Pakatan Harapan came into power.

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 20 — An anonymously started petition has been launched to demand Gobind Singh Deo’s resignation as communications and multimedia minister over his censure of Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) over its high subscription prices and poor customer satisfaction.

The petition was started by one “Concerned CITIZEN” who is likely linked to the government-linked corporation (GLC), based on the wording of the call.

Among others, the petition blames the minister for the decline in TM’s share price since the general election, which went from RM5.00 in May to RM2.26 currently.

It contrasted this with Maxis Bhd’s share price to suggest a bias towards the private firm, insisting that Gobind was also ignoring consumer complaints about Maxis and the related Astro pay-TV operator

The petition denounced Gobind as criticising TM’s performance without offering solutions and maintained that he should be aware of the technical difficulties facing the GLC in its broadband push.

“There is also a rumour or speculation that it is a plan so that Maxis will be able to buy TM with the current prices and with that, Malaysia will lose one of it’s GLC. Hence, we feel that this need to be stop to save Malaysia before it is too late.

“Therefore, we demand a minister that is unbiased and have adequate knowledge on telecomunication industry that will be better for the citizen of Malaysia,” the petition read.

The petition aims to secure 10,000 signatures and has over 8,000 this morning.

KUALA LUMPUR: The communications and multimedia ministry (KKMM) has called on Telekom Malaysia (TM) to explain its high charges for its Streamyx line-based broadband service and address grouses of customers.

Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he had directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to seek a clarification from TM and a report would be released by next week.

“TM should be more concerned. They should provide an explanation regarding the Streamyx issue to its customers. What are the suggestions for resolving this issue?

“If Streamyx’s copper infrastructure (phone line cables) are not capable of delivering high-speed broadband, please state so and clearly explain its next steps to solve the problem,” he said in a tweet today.

He also pointed out that keeping mum over the issue is not an option, especially when there are so many Streamyx users in the country.

“Whatever the case, TM should value its customers and respond,” he added.
