Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has distributed photographs of BN leaders posing with the wife of a businessperson detained in connection with the undersea tunnel scandal.

This comes in the wake of the second photograph of Lim with the suspect, who allegedly received RM19 million after promising he can derail MACC’s probe into the tunnel.

At a press conference today, the chief minister questioned who was leaking the photographs of him with the businessperson to the media.

Lim asked how were these photographs leaked when only the businessperson had them in his mobile phone.

“Even I do not have them.

“BN’s attempt to pass off BN’s scandals as Pakatan Harapan’s scandals will not work, when the people can see the BN federal government for the global kleptocracy that it is,” he added.

Lim said there might be more photographs of him and the businessperson, including with his wife and family members.

“So what is common to me will lead the BN media to ask next why I am taking photos with his wife and family members.

“Does the act of taking photos with him, his wife and family make both of us close buddies?” he asked.

“If taking photos with his wife makes us buddies, then will the BN media also print photos of his wife with other BN leaders?” Lim asked when distributing the photos to members of the media.

“Will the BN media question and seek explanations from the BN ministers about them taking photos with the businessperson’s wife?” he added.

Based on the photographs of the businessperson’s wife with BN leaders, Lim claimed that it was clear that the husband and wife are strong BN supporters.

Therefore, he claimed, it was no surprise that the businessperson was appointed as a director of a major publicly listed firm.

“That is why the BN media is advised to remember not to throw stones when you live in glass houses,” he added.

Previously, The Star reported that the businessperson’s wife is a radio deejay who had a Tamil programme focusing on Indian Malaysian families living in poverty.

She gained prominence for her social work and in 2013 attracted controversy when she was identified in the list of “Most Powerful Women in Malaysia”.

The list was an advertorial paid for by a small firm. The businessperson’s wife has denied reports that she was behind the advertorial.

Lim shows photo of businessman under MACC investigation with Star boss

IN a tit-for-tat move, Lim Guan Eng today highlighted a photograph taken last year of Star Media Group boss Wong Chun Wai with a businessman, who is under investigation for allegedly receiving RM19 million from the Penang undersea tunnel project contractor.

This follows criticism hurled at the chief minister after a photo of him and the businessman made the rounds on social media last week.

Wong said he did not know the businessman, who was recently remanded by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission for allegedly receiving money from Consortium Zenith Construction Sdn Bhd for “consultancy services” to stop the anti-graft agency’s probe into the state’s tunnel and highways project.

The newspaper boss said as chief executive officer of the Star Media Group, he meets “all kinds of people” on the job, and is asked to pose for pictures with people who are mostly unknown to him.

“I do not know this particular person implicated,” he said of the MACC suspect.

“This particular photo of me, shown by the chief minister, was taken on the night of August 8 last year at the StarProperty.my Real Estate Awards Night 2017, at Nexus Bangsar South in Kuala Lumpur.

“The event was organised by Star Property, which is a subsidiary of the Star Media Group.

“As is evident in the photo, where there are more than two people present, it was a public function and not held at anyone’s private residence.

“I was dressed in a black dinner jacket, and was for sure wearing my shoes when that particular photo was taken,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, during a press conference at his Komtar office, Lim showed the photo to members of the media, saying the businessman is a Barisan Nasional strongman and not his “buddy”, as his critics have claimed.

“There are many photos that indicate that the businessman is a BN strongman.

“I don’t want to play dirty politics like them, using a photo to say that certain people are ‘buddies’. I can also show many photos of me with federal ministers.

“But, I will just show a photo of the man with an MCA strongman,” he said, showing the photo of Wong, the businessman and a third person, who is not identified.

‘No buddies’: Penang CM’s office slams viral photo smear attempt

Published on  |  Modified on

The office of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has called attempts to link him to the businessperson arrested by MACC over the Penang undersea tunnel project a “disgusting” smear.

The statement from the office was issued in response to BN strategic communications deputy director Eric See-To, who had asked Lim to verify a viral photo purportedly showing Lim next to the businessperson.

“This is not only ridiculous but a disgusting attempt to smear the Penang Chief Minister by relying on one photograph.

“As a public figure the Penang Chief Minister has taken many photographs with many personalities, and cannot recall how many times or where each and every photograph was taken.

“Does taking a photo makes one a buddy or one who is close to BN into a DAP supporter?” the statement read.

See-To said yesterday the businessperson depicted in the photo was supposedly arrested by MACC over allegations that he received RM19 million to help stave off investigations into the tunnel project.

The CM’s office noted that the Penang government is awaiting a full explanation from the project’s contractor, Consortium Zenith Sdn Bhd, over the alleged RM19 million sum, as well as a further RM3 million paid to another individual.

“BN newspapers are now spinning a story that the businessperson allegedly involved in receiving the money is a buddy of the Penang Chief Minister, and hence connected to receiving RM19 million.

“This is another classic case of innocent parties, in this case the Penang state government, who are clean, being made the scapegoat for culprits closely connected to BN.”
