The Prisons Department has confirmed jailed former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will be released on June 8, earlier than scheduled.
Yesterday, PKR president and Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told delegates at Pakatan Harapan Wanita’s convention in Kajang that the PKR de facto chief was expected to be freed on June 11.
Sun Daily today reported Prisons Department director-general Zulkifli Omar as saying, “The 2000 Prison Regulations (No. 28) states that if a prisoner’s release date falls on a weekend or public holiday, they have to be released the day before.
“Because June 10 is a Sunday and June 9 is a Saturday, he will be released on Friday, June 8.”
Yesterday marked Anwar’s 1,602nd day as a “political detainee”, noted Wan Azizah.

Wan Azizah: Anwar will be free on June 11
Jailed opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who is currently serving a five-year jail term on a sodomy conviction, is expected to be freed on June 11.
“Insya Allah, according to the law, he will be freed on June 11,” Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told 1,000 women delegates at the Pakatan Harapan Women convention held at Kajang today.
“Today is the 1,602nd day he became political detainee,” the Harapan president said, adding that although he is in prison, his spirit was still with the opposition coalition.
Anwar was convicted of sodomy for the second time in 2014, a charge he claims is politically motivated, with the Federal Court upholding his five-year sentence in Feb 2015. The sentence is being cut short for good behaviour.

Zahid: Govt respects court’s decision to release Anwar
SHAH ALAM: The Government will respect the decision of the court to release former opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, said Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Deputy Prime Minister, however, said that if the “big day” happens earlier, it will be a bit later before Anwar could hold any important post in the country.
It is believed that Dr Ahmad Zahid was referring to the upcoming general election.
“The Government abides by the sentence set by the court. The length of a prison sentence has to be respected by all parties,” he told reporters after flagging off participants for the Antarctica Charity Run 2018 at Karangkraf here Sunday.
Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail term for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 32, at Desa Damansara condominium in Bukit Damansara on June 26, 2008.
At a press conference on Saturday (Jan 6), Anwar’s wife and PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said her husband will be released from prison on June 11.
