Kit Siang touched by MCA man’s ‘sorry’

Published:     Modified:

Lim Kit Siang is touched by suspended Pahang MCA division leader David Choi’s apology to a farmer who was arrested for sharing a video deemed insulting to Deputy Education Minister Chong Sin Woon.

The farmer’s video was in response to Chong’s “deity” jibe at Lim’s son and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng after massive floods hit the northern state.

As a result of his apology, Choi was stripped of all party positions in the Indera Mahkota division.

Lim said although Choi had been punished by his party superiors, the latter, however, had done the right thing by apologising for the injustice suffered by the farmer from Taiping, Perak.

“In fact, the MCA national leadership should emulate Choi’s example, apologise and make amends to the Taiping farmer as well,” he added in a media statement.

The farmer was arrested in Taiping over a police report lodged by MCA Youth and brought to Kuantan, Pahang, to be remanded for sharing the video, in which a netizen had insulted Chong using vulgar words.

However, the netizen who shot the original video is yet to be located.

Following the farmer’s release two days later, Choi met him and apologised for the incident, much to the chagrin of MCA leaders.

Latest twist in ‘deity jibe’, Pahang MCA leader stripped of party positions

Published:     Modified:

An MCA division leader was suspended from party positions for apologising to a farmer who was arrested for sharing a video deemed insulting to deputy minister Chong Sin Woon, following the latter’s “deity” jibe after the Penang floods.

China Press reported that David Choi was stripped of all party positions in the Indera Mahkota division, including as its public complaints bureau chief, committee member, and GE14 operation room, banner and pamphlet chief.

The division will write to the party’s central disciplinary committee to decide on Choi’s party membership.

Choi had yesterday apologised to the Taiping-based farmer, who was released from a two-day remand for sharing a Facebook live video last week, deemed insulting to Chong, who is the Deputy Education Minister.

The farmer was arrested in Taiping, Perak, and brought to Kuantan, Pahang, to be remanded for sharing the video, in which a netizen had insulted Chong using vulgar words. However, the netizen who shot the original video is yet to be located.

The farmer was arrested after MCA Youth lodged a report against the video.

When contacted by Malaysiakini, Choi said that in apologising, he was merely representing some of the party members.

“MCA leaders claim to represent all Chinese Malaysians, but so much effort was used to go after a poor farmer.

“The people will judge MCA from this incident. I want to tell them (MCA leaders), the Heavens are watching you,” he said, adding that he had no issues with the suspension, as his position was appointed.

According to Choi, he has not received the official suspension letter from the party and he only found out (about the suspension) from media reports on the press conference held by the Indera Mahkota division to announce the matter.

“This is MCA’s loss and not my loss. I will not quit MCA and if the (central) leadership wants to suspend my membership, it is their prerogative.”

This is not Choi’s first brush with the party leadership. In 2012, his membership as the Indera Mahkota MCA Youth chief was suspended for three years for taking a strong stance against the party leadership in regards to the Lynas rare earth refinery in Gebeng, Pahang.

He resumed his membership in 2015.

Ti: MCA Youth chief was reminding Guan Eng of his past deeds, words

Published:     Modified:

MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon was merely reminding Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng that he should not have belittled BN parties in the past, according to MCA publicity spokesperson Ti Lian Ker.

He was commenting on Chong’s remarks during the MCA annual general assembly over the weekend, which ignited a firestorm of protest.

Chong had said that despite his “tokong (deity)-like status”, Lim was unable to resolve the flood woes in his state. He has since apologised.

However, Ti noted how Lim and DAP had in the past exploited unfortunate incidents for political mileage, such as the disappearance of MH370.

“(They) were telling the whole world this was the doing of an irresponsible BN and that the world should not trust the BN government.
.

Ti said it was in this context that Chong reminded the Penang chief minister to exercise humility as tragedies cannot be predicted.

“For this reminder, Chong was painted as uncouth, disrespectful and told to resign.

“If we were to follow the above reasoning and justification, Lim should have resigned on several occasions,” he added.

Mujahid: Chong’s ‘tokong’ comment foolish

PETALING JAYA: MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon’s tongue-in-cheek remark over the massive flooding in Penang has not gone down well with several opposition members.

Chong, in commenting on Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s appeal to the federal government for assistance following the devastating Penang floods, had said that the latter was not able to overcome the problem, despite his “deity-like” status.

“(Despite being) ‘deity-like’… he is not as powerful as he claims to be in solving the flood problem.

“Therefore, don’t fight the heavens, even if you’re a deity,” he was quoted as saying by Malaysiakini during the 64th MCA annual general assembly yesterday.

Amanah vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa did not take kindly to Chong’s remarks, especially “when the Penang government is struggling to ensure its folks are protected and sheltered”.

Mujahid, when contacted yesterday evening, could be heard talking to some other people involved in relief efforts at a flood operations centre in Sungai Dua, one of the worst-hit areas.

“The chief minister and the rest of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) leadership, have given our utmost to utilise all government and state agencies.

“(Chong is) trying to make a fool of himself. It is not a timely comment.

“The whole of Penang is in a bad mood because of what happened. Whatever he said does not help to alleviate what Penangites are going through.

“Ask him to come down and see (the situation) for himself instead of making foolish and unhelpful comments,” he told FMT.
.

DAP MP Lim Lip Eng also slammed Chong over the remarks.

He said Chong was among the few Barisan Nasional (BN) leaders who played politics and made fun of the natural disaster that hit not only Penang, but various parts of the northwest region of Peninsular Malaysia.
.

Meanwhile, Chong, in a brief Facebook post written in Mandarin yesterday evening, apologised for offending fellow Penangites with his words.

Chong added that the Penang MCA and its youth wing would be aiding in flood relief efforts.

Chong had appeared to be referring to the deity, or “tokong” term, first coined by Lim’s deputy chief minister Mansor Othman back in 2012.

Back then, Mansor, who is now Nibong Tebal MP, had mentioned Lim’s arrogance, due to his “tokong” status within the Chinese community.

Amid Penang floods, Chong tells ‘deity-like’ Guan Eng not to fight the heavens

Published:     Modified:

Editor’s Note: Chong Sin Woon has apologised for his remarks

MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon today waded into Lim Guan Eng’s appeal to the federal government for assistance in Penang’s devastating floods, stating that the chief minister was not able to overcome the problem despite his “deity-like” status.

“We saw Lim Guan Eng made a video in the early hours appealing for assistance from the federal government.

“(Despite being) ‘deity-like’…he is not as powerful as he claims to be in solving the flood problem.

“Therefore, don’t fight the heavens, even if you’re a deity,” he said during the 64th MCA annual general assembly at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Chong’s comment elicited laughs and applause from the floor.
