Mahathir returns to Kedah amid concerns PAS gaining ground

Published on  |  Modified on

GE14 | Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s campaign has come full circle as he returns to his home state of Kedah on Saturday.

Mahathir had started his campaign in Langkawi on nomination day last week. After a whirlwind tour all around Peninsular Malaysia, his return came amid concerns PAS was gaining ground in the state.

His schedule for the day started with a visit to pay respects to the grave of the late PAS president Fadzil Noor, and a speech to about 300 people in Kampung Bukit, Pokok Sena shortly after where he praised Fadzil as a wise and moderate leader.

But his grand finale for the day was no doubt the ceramah in Padang Sera, Jerlun, later that night.

Some 4,000 people had gathered here to listen to the speech despite the venue being so dimly lit that many attendees had to whip out the smartphones to light their way when on the move.

Organisers claimed that 10,000 people were present.

Hurled with rotten eggs, Kedah BN files police report

Published on  |  Modified on

According to Umno Online, Kedah BN secretary Md Rozai Shaifian said the incident is believed to have occurred in the wee hours of the morning.

“Due to the incident, the carpet on the stage had to be replaced.

“Kedah Umno views this incident as an attempt to sabotage the programme. However, it has not dampened the spirit of our party workers.

“In fact, the sabotage attempt does not affect the ceramah which will proceed as planned,” he added.

The report was filed by Kedah Umno information secretary Sohaimi Zainal Abidin with the Kotar Setar district police headquarters this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Md Rozai also urged the party machinery to tighten security at various locations.

“I have asked for tighter security at the party’s office, operations centre and other places to avoid any attempts of sabotage by certain quarters,” he said.

Silent revolt awaits BN in Kedah

Diyana Ibrahim

IT has been more than 18 months since Mukhriz Mahathir was forced to quit as Kedah menteri besar, but the new MB still has a tough time wooing young voters.

And besides Mukhriz, Barisan Nasional Menteri Besar Ahmad Bashah Md Hanapiah also has to deal with former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is from Kedah, and now leading Bersatu and the opposition pact Pakatan Harapan.

While on paper, BN looks capable of keeping the northern state because of the likelihood of three-cornered fights, these underlying currents among the state’s 1.1 million voters could work against the ruling coalition at the 14th general election, which must be called by next August.

At the heart of the battle is the task of winning over Malay voters, who are expected to be split between Umno, PAS and Amanah, PKR and Bersatu – the last three parties being members of PH.

“Is there anyone in BN and Umno we can trust?” asked a local who only wanted to be known as Bob, at a stall in Kg Langgar, Bedong.

He went on to list the names of several state Umno leaders with their own alleged scandals and were living beyond their means, and noted how the BN lynchpin party was dealing with internal conflict.

“Do we want leaders like these at a time when the ordinary folk are suffering?

“Whichever candidate Umno places in Kedah will not gain the support of ordinary Kedahans,” the 30-year-old computer retail shop owner said.
.

“BN’s problems in Kedah are exacerbated by Kedah Umno’s own weaknesses and Ahmad Bashah’s unpopularity,” said Ilham Centre director Hisommudin Bakar.

“There will be an internal revolt in Kedah Umno and PH will benefit,” said the pollster, based on a recent survey conducted in Kedah.

Hisommudin said the survey in May showed that Umno will see protest votes in the Langkawi, Jerlun, Kubang Pasu, Alor Setar, Pokok Sena, Kuala Kedah and Merbok parliamentary seats.

“The protest is minimal in Sik, Baling and Padang Terap while the non-Malay voters will be the deciding factor in Sg Petani, Padang Serai and Kulim Bandar Baru.

Kedah PKR was not slighted by DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang’s suggestion that the DAP be allowed to contest in two more state seats in Kedah that were previously contested by PKR.

Kedah PKR chief Dr Azman Ismail said the state PKR is always prepared to consider feedback from senior leaders within Pakatan Harapan.

“Yes, (Lim’s suggestion) will be taken into account, Insya Allah,” he told Malaysiakini when contacted.

Apart from being guided by principles of democracy, Azman said they were also guided by the “wisdom of party seniors”.

“Lim is a senior. (So) we will discuss (and) we will also take into account the reality on the ground,” he said.

Azman stressed that there were no hard feelings over Lim’s proposal.

“Because that is part of the process of negotiations,” he said.

Kit Siang: Harapan can win Kedah if DAP contests two more seats

Pakatan Harapan can form the next Kedah government if DAP is allowed to contest in two more state seats in the state, said party supremo Lim Kit Siang.

The seats DAP is eyeing are the MCA held Kulim and Gurun seats.

In a statement today, Lim forecasted a Malaysian tsunami if 10 percent of Malays and 5 percent of non-Malays switch over to Harapan’s side in the next general election.

This he said, would not only help Harapan win a majority in parliament, but also in Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Penang, and Selangor.

“Under this scenario, however, the outcome in Kedah will be an 18-18 deadlock between Harapan and BN, with PAS unable to win a single seat in Kedah although PAS candidates will be responsible for BN winning 14 of the 18 seats because of split votes.

“DAP will be able to help Harapan break this 18-18 deadlock so that Harapan can win the Kedah state government if DAP contests in Kulim and Gurun state assembly seats as well as to mobilise support for Harapan candidates in the central and southern Kedah,” he said.
