RMAF cordon off forest area at suspected RMAF Hawk 108 crash site

KEMAMAN: Three Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) men have cordoned off a secondary forest area along Jalan Chukai-Ibok here, where wreckage of the RMAF Hawk 108 advanced jet trainer which crashed near Kampung Yah Yah here yesterday is believed to have been found.
The trio, armed with machetes to clear the underbrush, emerged from a peat swamp forest area at 11.10am, having walked from the suspected wreckage site to the main road to seal off the area from the public.
Curious villagers and bystanders gathered along the road shoulder, hoping to catch a glimpse of the wreckage from a distance. However, the trees and tall grass blocked their view.
Questions posed by members of the media to the three men, whose pants were soaked from the knees down, went unanswered as they politely announced that they could not provide any information.
It is learnt that the wreckage site is located some 250 metres from the main road, and that the area is only accessible by heavy vehicles.

I thought the pilots were involved in training, says witness
Siti Zamilah Mohd Hussin says she saw the 108 Hawk fighter jet pilots parachuting down and waved at them as she thought they were undergoing a training exercise.

KEMAMAN: A witness who caught a glimpse of two pilots on parachutes who plunged to their deaths after their 108 Hawk fighter jet crashed said she had seen one of them making a cross sign with his hands in her direction.
Siti Zamilah Mohd Hussin, 27, said she was sweeping the courtyard of her house on a hill in Kampung Pondok Pasir here at about 12.30pm when she spotted the two men on parachutes.
“I saw one of them tugging at his parachute rope and making a cross sign with his hands in my direction. I responded by waving at them because I thought the two men were involved in parachute training,” she told reporters here yesterday.
She said she saw the two pilots plunging into the area behind the house, after which she heard a loud thud.
At 2.30pm, the pilots, Major Yasmi Mohamed Yusof, 39, and Major Hasri Zahari, 31, were found dead.

Their bodies were found in a swamp area in Kampung Pondok Pasir, adjacent to Kampung Yak Yah in Ibok here.
Ali Mohamad Mohd Hussin, 37, who lives in the same neighbourhood, said he heard two loud bangs while sitting in front of his house.
“I heard the sound twice, then everything went quiet. I tried to look around but saw nothing. A few hours later, I saw a helicopter hovering in the vicinity of my house,” he said.
Another witness, Hafizuddin Yunus, 32, said he saw the fighter jet flying low before it began emitting thick smoke.

RMAF: Crew of missing Hawk 108 killed in crash
KUANTAN: Two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) personnel were killed when their Hawk 108 fighter jet crashed 51km from the RMAF’s air base at Kuantan.
The Hawk 108 training fighter jet took off from the Kuantan air force base at 11am and lost contact half an hour later at 11.30am on Thursday.

#RMAF fighter jet goes missing off Pahang skies

KUALA LUMPUR: A search and rescue mission has been scrambled to locate a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Hawk 108 fighter jet, which disappeared over Pahang skies today.
The fighter jet had departed from the Kuantan air force base at 11am before losing contact at 11.30am.
It is believed to have disappeared north of Kuantan near the Pahang-Terengganu border.
The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in a press statement, said a search and rescue operation is underway.
