Claim of ‘plastic rice’ sold at Kulai supermarket untrue, says Johor Domestic Trade
.

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry today has denied an allegation on social media that a supermarket in Kulai is selling ‘plastic rice’.

Its director Khairul Anwar Bachok said the allegation turned out to be false after the ministry probed further into the complaint made by a 60-year-old man, who claimed to have purchased a 5kg pack of Beras Wangi Siam which contained ‘plastic rice’ last Wednesday.

“The Ministry has listened to the explanation of the branch manager and storekeeper. We have also checked the documentation and sent samples of the product for analysis.

“The report that came back last Thursday showed no evidence of plastic rice.

“The claims which had gone viral is untrue,” Khairul Anwar said today.

JOHOR BAHRU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) has sent three samples of rice, alleged to be “plastic rice” taken from a supermarket in Kulai, to the Chemistry Department to determine its authenticity.

Johor KPDNKK enforcement chief Aris Mamat said they had conducted an inspection at the supermarket and ordered the product not to be sold to consumers.

“On June 7 at about 7pm, we went to the supermarket and took three samples of the rice and sent them to the Chemistry Department here to identify the content of the product.

“The results from these samples will be announced as soon as possible. If it is true the said product contains plastic, we will take measures to ensure consumers’ safety,” he said today.

Aris said he had received a complaint on the “plastic rice” and would take similar action in the event of other complaints being lodged.

“Since this case occurred in Kulai, we went to the location to investigate and as the product carries an address in Kedah, we have asked for help from the Kedah KPDNKK to help investigate the product,” he added.

NTUC FairPrice files police report on fake rice rumour

The rumours, in both English and Chinese, were spread on social media and messaging platforms on Tuesday.

A person had claimed in the message that he has confirmation from a chemist friend that the rice was made of plastic.

Some messages also claimed NTUC FairPrice had agreed to withdraw from its stores all its jasmine fragrant rice, which it had carried for over 10 years.

At 8pm on Tuesday, the supermarket chain posted a message on its Facebook page to deny the rumours.

Health ministry: No fake rice in Malaysia

January 27, 2017

Health DG Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says this has been verified by Padiberas Nasional Berhad.
.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Health Ministry said yesterday Malaysia does not import fake rice as alleged in a recent social media report that went viral.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said this had been verified by Padiberas Nasional Berhad (Bernas).

Furthermore, monitoring by the ministry found that the three brands of rice said to have been produced from plastic were not sold in the country, he said in a statement.

“As notified via a health ministry press statement dated May 21, 2015, the rice Malaysia imports is usually from Vietnam, Thailand and Pakistan, as disclosed by Bernas.

“According to Bernas, the rice is imported in bulk and then packed in this country in various sizes,” he said.

The statement said it was needless for the people to worry because food safety monitoring and enforcement were conducted constantly to ensure that food in the market was safe for consumption.
