Former minister Idris Jala, who has been tasked with scrutising the Felda Global Ventures Holdings (FGV) crisis, visited the Federal Land Authority (Felda) headquarters in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

He arrived at the building, accompanied by policemen, when more than 20 officers from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) were at the Felda office to retrieve documents related to their probe on FGV.

“Im trying to get the facts. While I’m doing that, I don’t want to make any statement because that would be very prejudicial,” Idris told reporters as he left about an hour later.

Yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office announced Idris’ appointment as an independent party to look into the issues plaguing FGV.

The PMO said the former minister would establish the facts and recommend the way forward following the FGV board’s decision to suspend its chief executive officer Zakaria Arshad, chief financial officer and two other senior members of the management team.

The PMO also confirmed that the relevant parties had agreed to Idris’ appointment.

Those consulted were Felda chairperson Shahrir Samad, FGV chairperson Isa Samad, Zakaria and FGV chief financial officer Ahmad Tifli Mohd Talha.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers today retrieved documents from Menara Felda as the anti-graft agency began its investigations into Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGV).

Over 10 MACC personnel were spotted at the building at 10am.

MACC’s visit to Menara Felda comes a day after it promised to investigate several company officials for alleged corruption and abuse of power.

The FGV board of directors, the world’s third-largest palm plantation operator, had on Tuesday, ordered FGV president and CEO Zakaria Arshad to go on an indefinite leave of absence as it conducts an internal investigation into transactions involving a subsidiary.

Zakaria has denied any wrongdoing and even called on the MACC to conduct its own investigation into the allegations made by the company against him, and into the company itself, asking the anti-graft agency to focus on the procurement department.

MACC’s visit today also comes a day after Zakaria had a four-hour meeting with the agency in Putrajaya to assist in investigations into alleged improprieties involving the company.

Zakaria, who was appointed CEO in April last year, was asked to go on leave pending the outcome of investigations into the issue of a delayed payment by Afghan company Safitex to FGV subsidiary Delima Oil Products.

Apart from Zakaria, FGV chief financial officer Ahmad Tifli Mohd Talha and FGV Trading CEO Ahmad Salman Omar were also asked to take a leave of absence.
