MCA President: There is mutual distrust between BN Govt and the Chinese community. That’s only half the truth. The other half: The Chinese distrust MCA…

Chinese voter uptrend for MCA

CHINESE voter support for the Barisan Nasional (BN), particularly MCA, has gradually become more positive, as witnessed by their massive support for each programme organised by the party, such as the ‘Jalinan Rakyat’ (JR) Plus.

MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon said the current sentiments of the Chinese community were better and warmer towards BN, as compared to the situation in the 13th general election (GE13) when the community seemed to reject the presence of BN leaders in their area.

“This is evident now. When the candidates visit the voters, they are welcomed by the Chinese community which even makes requests to take pictures with them. For me, this is a good sign,” he said.

MCA will not die as long as Umno survives

YOURSAY | ‘Recent excitement over China investments has made MCA more relevant.’

What can MCA do for BN?

Clever Voter: Despite the declining support in urban constituencies, MCA will survive.

They have deep pockets and the support of the business community. The support from wealthy tycoons is because they are closed to the establishment.

Recent excitement over China investments has also made MCA more relevant.

But the political party cannot be forgiven for doing a lousy job at the policy level. They are too self-serving. The Port Klang Free Zone (PKFZ) scandal is a classic case of ‘you help me, I help you’.

Not all members of Chinese community are wealthy and many do not enjoy access to employment, business and social opportunities. Sadly, this is not going to happen as long as the party is content with only crumbs.

Iiiizzzziiii: This is quite an insightful article which attempts to dwell on the psyche of the Chinese Malaysians. Good observation, but it misses the main point.

MCA caters for an aging Chinese population who yearns for the good old days, without addressing the needs of the younger generation.

It is not making any headway with them because this is the information age, and there are many ways to obtain news other than through its official mouthpiece, The Star.

In this modern age, MCA is caught with their pants down because of the younger generation’s ease of accessing information, providing them with a different take of the story.

The younger generation is very much different from their elders and perhaps the author (S Thayaparan) may want to explore this area further.

Malaysia4All: Don’t forget that MCA was given a lot of leeway before by the Chinese community that continued to vote for MCA despite MCA being sidelined by Umno within the BN coalition.

MCA is no longer fighting for the Chinese, as it is clearly seen as Umno’s lapdog that would not criticise Umno for its wrongdoing.

This realisation has set in that it was no longer useful voting for MCA as it is no longer protecting the rights of the Chinese minority. Cheat me once, shame on you; cheat me twice, shame on me.

The Chinese have learned not to be cheated twice.

Dont Just Talk: A past president of MCA, Ling Liong Sik said that the fish rots from the head and if the MCA leaders and followers fail to see the magnitude of corruption in this country and are blind to the fish head, who is MCA ‘tai-kor’, receiving US$681 million in his personal bank account, how do they expect the Chinese community to vote for BN in the coming 14th GE?

These are the basic principles of leadership and yet MCA leaders fail to see the elephant which is running amok in their China shop.

What can MCA do for BN?

S Thayaparan
S THAYAPARAN is Commander (Rtd) of the Royal Malaysian Navy.

COMMENT | The answer to that is MCA obviously cannot do anything much for the ruling BN coalition anymore. How do you remain relevant when you have lost your voting base? Umno does not need MCA to win elections. The dodgy meme that the current Umno prime minster is a “minority” prime minster is as fallacious as the so-called “Chinese tsunami”.

It is pointless talking about the other communities here in Malaysia because this has always been about the Malay-Chinese dialectic. How this regime demonises the Chinese community when the hegemon is in trouble or relies on it – former prime minister and now de facto opposition leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad actually at one time thanked the Chinese community for sustaining his power – in times of plenty demonstrates the symbiotic relationship between economic power, race and political stability.
.

The “Malay” heartland, which the opposition has been unable to influence beyond coming up with dodgy data on how the heartland is not as secure as Umno believes, remains the key to Putrajaya. That most strategically adroit of political operatives – Mahathir – realises that if he can destabilise Umno in the peninsula to the point that Umno has to rely on Sabah and Sarawak for power, it would be game over for the current Umno potentate.

All of this merely means that as far as remaining relevant, MCA has very little to do now. By its own admission it has lost its Chinese voting base. The problem is, what does MCA think the Chinese community really wants? What exactly has MCA done wrong that has made the community lose trust, not in the BN coalition but rather in MCA?

Five years ago, in the MCA’s long journey into night, I wrote – “What is really destroying MCA is not the propaganda of DAP but the acceptance by a large voting demographic of the Chinese community that no representation in the government is better than MCA representation.”

So, this idea that representation in the federal government is the holy grail of the basis of “Chinese” support is mistaken. As far as anyone can tell, and most political insiders, establishment and opposition will tell you – most often off the record – is that all the opposition has to do is remain relevant on a state level and the majority of the Chinese vote will always go to the opposition.

MCA boss admits Chinese community, gov’t distrust each other

There is mutual distrust between the Chinese community and the government, conceded MCA president Liow Tiong Lai.

In view of this, he called on the government to break the deadlock, and extend an olive branch by implementing policies in line with the wishes of the community.

Speaking to Sin Chew Daily, Liow said Umno was disappointed that the Chinese backed the opposition in the 2008 and 2013 general elections.

On the same note, the MCA president said the Chinese community should support the BN government in order for it to maintain a moderate approach with the support of various races.

“I must emphasise that the strength of the Chinese is precious, they can change the future of the nation,” he added.

Liow, who is also transport minister, pledged that as long as MCA exists, the party would ensure that Umno adopts a moderate and democratic approach.

“I am a Chinese… I understand there are unhappy voices. So, I often voice out in the cabinet that BN should deal with the sentiments of the community instead of handing out funds and goodies during the general election, thinking they can get the support of the Chinese in return,” he added.

MCA won’t accept the reality that it is seen as still betraying the Chinese.

GE 14 is coming and a desperate MCA tries to find its place in a nation filled with political parties, old and new. It has to do something. It has to attack everyone else.

You name it, the MCA is after it: UMNO, Mahathir, Muhyiddin, the DAP, who else?

Desperate times calls for desperate measures: The MCA attacks all and sundry…

MCA can’t accept the reality that it is a subordinate of UMNO, a truth that is spoken so directly by an UMNO stalwart.

Nazri said the “big” needs to discipline “small” crew members on a ship, responding to MCA central committee Ti Lian Ker’s volley yesterday.

“I can be arrogant because I am big, so I can teach him,” the Tourism Minister told Malaysiakini.”
.

“I am good with (DAP secretary-general) Lim Guan Eng because I respect democracy as the Chinese community chose Lim Guan Eng and DAP.

“So I have to respect democracy and respect them (DAP). Why would I want to respect Ti when the people reject him.

“I am confident even if he were to contest in the general election, the rakyat will also reject him because the Chinese people truly hate people like him,” Nazri told Malaysiakini.

Nazri ‘I-am-a-Warrior’ Aziz puts MCA in its place. Down there…under the table, feeding on scraps.

..

At least someome in MCA can see how far it has fallen.

After the last general election, MCA was mocked as the ‘7-11′ convenience store due to the party only wining seven parliament and 11 state seats.

If the Chinese continue to vote against it in the next polls, party deputy president Wee Ka Siong said MCA might become “1+3D DaMaCai” with only one parliament and three state seats.

The MCA #NowhereToStand: From 7-11 to 1+3D DaMaCai party

MCA will do all Malaysians a good deed by closing shop on the ground that it is time Malaysia is run as a country for all its citizens irrespective of colour creed or race. All citizens are equal. No one is more equal than another. The country should treat its people as those who have and those who have not and meaning aid be given to help the have nots catch up.
