Minister apologises over welfare officers’ poor treatment of the needy
.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim was forced to apologise after complaints were aired over the poor treatment of those in need by the Welfare Department (JKM).

This was during a Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) dialogue with the ministry, where welfare officers were accused of behaving like “cowboys”.

“I apologise on behalf of the officers. I ask officers to not bring along their personal issues, their stress or anger when dealing with clients,” she said at the session in Kajang.

“Ops Qaseh is for the good of vagrants and beggars. This is a rescue operation not an exercise to jail them,” said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Karim

3. THIS IS THE TRUTH ABOUT OPS QASEH

The government has declared “war” on the homeless found on the streets of Kuala Lumpur. Starting in early July, enforcement agencies will “sweep” the streets clean of all such people.

Some people would call Ops Qaseh a program to sweep under the carpet the homeless and the unresolved problems caused by the lack of affordable accommodation for immigrants from the rural areas and small towns.

‘Homeless will be taken to court within 24 hours’The Social Welfare Department has promised to produce the homeless in court within 24 hours of them being detained, so as to obtain temporary detention order against these people. This will be for those rounded up under Ops Qaseh, the biggest sting operation against the homeless that has been launched by the department. The Star reported today that even before Ops Qaseh, the department has been rounding up at least 10 homeless people in each of its operations so far in the last few years.Full story: http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/268669
