PKR denies political bureau agreed to appoint Dr Mahathir as chair

PKR has denied a news report claiming that the party’s political bureau, which met last night. had agreed to appoint Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the chairperson of Pakatan Harapan.

“Unfortunately the report is inaccurate. Any formal announcement will be made through the Harapan presidential council,” PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil told Malaysiakini.

Asked if the matter was discussed during the meeting, he said that discussions were ongoing, but declined to comment further.

The Malaysian Insight had cited sources as saying that PKR had agreed to the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) chairperson heading the Harapan pro tem committee as chairperson, while PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail would be the coalition’s president.

However, others present at the meeting, also told Malaysiakini that nothing had been finalised.

DR Mahathir Mohamad it is. After weeks of doubt and indecision, the PKR political bureau has finally agreed to the former prime minister heading the Pakatan Harapan pro tem committee.

Sources told The Malaysian Insight the decision was reached at the PKR political bureau meeting last night.

A PKR political bureau source told The Malaysian Insight that they agreed to Dr Mahathir leading the coalition as they believe it will enhance their prospects of capturing Putrajaya in the next elections.

“The political bureau agreed to have Dr Mahathir as PH chairman while Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be the president,” said the party insider.

The source added that PKR’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim will be PH adviser.

The Malaysian Insight also learnt that Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin and PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali will be PH deputy presidents.

“We agreed for Dr Mahathir to lead the coalition as we believe he can help capture the Malay votes which have been monopolised by Umno all this while,” said the insider.

Another ‘Harapan cabinet list’ surfaces at PKR congress

Another so-called Pakatan Harapan cabinet list has surfaced, this time at the PKR national congress held in Shah Alam today.

Several copies of the document, titled “Kabinet Harapan Malaysia” (Malaysia’s Harapan cabinet) were found at the staircase leading to the media room at the venue.

The list named PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as both the prime minister and home minister. Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, on the other hand, was named as her deputy and the finance minister.

The list bore the symbols of the four Pakatan Harapan parties – PKR, DAP, Parti Amanah Negara and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) – as well as Parti Warisan Sabah.

It is unclear why Warisan’s logo as well as its deputy president Darell Leiking is on the list. Warisan, although an opposition party, is not part of Pakatan Harapan.

Apart from Wan Azizah and Lim, also on the list are top leaders from Pakatan Harapan – with each party’s top leaders “filling” the cabinet line-up.

Notable exclusions from the list includes Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad and DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, who are the faces of their respective party.

The list also excludes PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli, who have been touted by their respective supporters as prime ministerial candidates.
