HINDRAF or Hindu Rights Action Force began as a coalition of 30 Hindu NGOs committed to the preservation of Hindu community rights and heritage in a multiracial Malaysia.
HINDRAF has made a major impact to the political landscape of Malaysia in staging the 2007 HINDRAF rally. In late 2007, several prominent members of the HINDRAF were arrested, some on charges of sedition after an enormous rally organised by HINDRAF in November. The charges were dismissed by the courts.
The group has over the last two years developed a broader political program to preserve and to push for equal rights and opportunities for the minority Indians. It has been successful in continuing to focus attention on the racist aspects of the Malaysian Government policies and is considered an extremist organization.

Hindraf wants 2 parliamentary, 4 state seats from PH
P Waythamoorthy says PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad acknowledges that Hindraf has the support of the Indian community.
.
PUTRAJAYA: Hindraf has officially requested that Pakatan Harapan (PH) allow it to contest two parliamentary and four state seats in the coming polls (GE14).
Its chairman P Waythamoorthy said the “Indian masses”, comprising 65% of the 900,000 Indian voters in the country, were with Hindraf.
“They want Hindraf to represent them in Parliament and state legislative assemblies in Perak, Kedah, Johor and Negeri Sembilan,” he said after a meeting between Hindraf leaders and PH chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Waythamoorthy said in today’s meeting, Mahathir had acknowledged the fact that Hindraf had the support of the Indian community.
He said Hindraf had no intention of upsetting Indian leaders in PH.
“I’m sure they will respect that Hindraf speaks for the Indian community.”
Waythamoorthy said Mahathir had asked the other PH parties to give Hindraf an opportunity to contest in GE14.
He said PH didn’t need to worry about support from urban Indian voters as their concern was more the rural Indians who were traditionally represented by MIC.
These rural Indians, he said, viewed Hindraf as an alternative to MIC.
Waythamoorthy also said the recent redelineation would not affect Hindraf’s ability to garner support from the Indian community to help PH win 31 parliamentary and 59 state seats.
“Our role will be especially vital during the 11 days of campaigning, when a lot of handouts will be given.
“Just like in 2008, despite the handouts to the people, we convinced them that voting for change is better.”

Waytha assures MIC will be ‘completely wiped out’
The Hindraf chief claims that the MIC’s talk about the BN government’s Malaysian Indian Blueprint and its budget for Indians are ‘lies’.
SEREMBAN: Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy has blamed MIC for the plight of downtrodden Indians in the country, and wants the Barisan Nasional (BN) party “to be taught a lesson”.
He said Hindraf would ask Pakatan Harapan to allow it to contest in the seats its components had lost to MIC in the last general election.
He said MIC would then be “wiped out” from the political scene.
“While we are campaigning to get rid of Barisan Nasional from Putrajaya, Hindraf will ensure that MIC is completely wiped out as the representatives of the Indian community,” he said.
“In the 50 years of BN rule, MIC has completely failed the Indian community,” he said at the launch of Hindraf’s “Zero Vote for BN” campaign during the 10th anniversary of its rally here last night.
Also present were Pakatan Harapan leaders such as DAP’s P Ramasamy, Anthony Loke and Zaid Ibrahim, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar and Amanah president Mohamad Sabu.
Waytha alleged that funds meant for Indians never reached the community because MIC had formed their own NGOs and allocated the money among themselves.
“They talk about the Malaysian Indian Blueprint (MIB) and that they are given a RM150 million budget, which are all lies,” he said.
“Firstly RM150 million is just peanuts for the downtrodden Indians, and even so, that money would not reach them,” he claimed.
“There is another allocation under the New Economic Model (NEM) and even that does not reach the people because MIC forms their own NGOs and they give it out among themselves,” he alleged.

Samy Vellu was the president of MIC from 1979 to 2010, for 11 consecutive terms. His first ministerial portfolio was also in 1979. However, he was defeated in his stronghold of Sungai Siput in the 2008 general election.

What did Dr M do for Indians? Vell Paari told to ask his dad
Lim Kit Siang has acknowledged that MIC treasurer-general S Vell Paari raised valid questions with regard to the plight of the Indian community during Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s 22-year tenure as prime minister.
However, the DAP veteran said Vell Paari’s father, former MIC president S Samy Vellu, who served in Mahathir’s cabinet during the two decades, should answer the questions.
In defending Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak saying that some have called him the father of the Indian community’s development in Malaysia and shifting the spotlight on Mahathir, Vell Paari posed the questions below.
1. Who caused the reduction of Indians within the civil service?
2. Who caused the systematic displacement of Indians from estates and into downtrodden longhouses and shackles they were forced to live in?
3. Who initiated the unfair intake into universities?
.
“These are valid questions, but the best person to answer these questions is none other than Vell Pari’s father, Samy Vellu, who was federal minister representing MIC and the Indian community during the whole period of 22 years when Mahathir was prime minister,” said Lim.
“In fact, Samy Vellu was a federal minister before Mahathir became prime minister and long after Mahathir had retired as prime minister,” he added in a statement.
Lim also asked Vell Paari to clearly state if he was repudiating his father’s political legacy as a “dark chapter” in the history of Malaysian Indians.
“And if so, why is Samy Vellu continuing as Malaysia’s special envoy on infrastructure to India and South Asia?“Furthermore, is Vell Pari of the view that his father does not deserve the Tun-ship he was conferred on Sept 9?
“Is Vell Pari being unfilial just to pursue his own political fortunes at the expense of his father? Let Samy Vellu speak up,” he added.

Mahathir Finally Seeks Help From Waytha Out There
Today is a historic day for the Malaysian Indian community. The man who for 22 years of his life did nothing to help alleviate their socio-economic status has finally sought help, in the most famous phrase, like from one Indian to another Indian.

After the meeting, HINDRAF chairman P. Waythamoorthy expressed confidence in delivering Indian votes to help Pakatan in GE14.

Hindraf wants to join Pakatan, guns for MIC seats
KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — Hindraf said today that it would apply to join the Pakatan Harapan federal opposition pact and planned to take on MIC in straight fights in the next general election.
The Indian rights non-governmental organisation, which announced earlier today that it would convert into a political party, also said it could help Pakatan Harapan in 31 federal and 59 state seats with significant Indian electorates that saw marginal Barisan Nasional (BN) victories in the last election.
“We hope to be able to take on MIC directly one to one, all the MIC seats,” Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorthy told Malay Mail Online.
“We can help [Pakatan] win in the 31 parliament seats; these are rural seats. We have enough ground support to move the voters in those 31 seats. That’s why we can add value to them. We give and take,” he added.
The 31 federal seats, he said, are in Kedah, Perak, Selangor, the Federal Territories, Negri Sembilan, Johor and Pahang.
In the 13th general election, MIC won four out of nine parliamentary seats, and five out of 18 state seats it contested.
.
Waythamoorthy said Hindraf — which came into prominence after its mass rally a decade ago in 2007 — would campaign for the marginalised Indian community.
When pointed out that some Malaysians wanted the country to move beyond race politics, he said the matter was still “debatable”.
“I know people are talking about it, but whether the country is ready, it’s debatable,” said the Hindraf leader. “We don’t need to even exist if there are enough politicians who will fight for minorities, [but] we don’t see that happening now.”

.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 ― Pressure group Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) announced today that it is applying to register as a political party, claiming a need for proper representation of the Indian community.
In a statement, Hindraf said the unanimous decision was made during an extraordinary general meeting on Sunday.
“After widespread nationwide forums and meetings with the grassroots Indian community, the overwhelming call was for Hindraf to evolve into a political party so that effective and proper representation of the Indian community is heard in the political sphere,” said its secretary Muniandy Ponnusamy.
The group said its legal counsel Karthigesan Shanmugam has advised delegates that the Societies Act 1966 through its Article 11(3)(b) does not bar such conversion, and its constitution fulfils Schedule 1(2) of the Act to function as a political party.
The group also urged Home Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to approve such application.
