Police arrest two in fake iPhone 6s scam

KUALA KUBU BARU: Police have busted a syndicate selling fake iPhone 6s following the arrest of two men, including a foreigner, in a raid yesterday.

The syndicate was selling the smartphone at RM500 per unit compared to the original market price which is higher than RM3,000 each.

Their target was mainly those who stopped at highway petrol stations or at the hypermarkets.

Hulu Selangor district police chief Superintendent R Supramaniam said the duo, aged 24 and 52, were separately arrested at Cheras and Ampang, after two reports claiming that they had fallen for the fraud was lodged on Wednesday.

The victims said they were approached by an individual offering them the deal when they were at a North- South Expressway (NSE) rest area petrol station.

“The victims left immediately after paying without checking the content. They only realised that it was a fake phone when it did not function after they inserted the SIM card,” Supramaniam said in a statement today.

Following the reports, Hulu Selangor district Commercial Crime Investigation division detained a 24-year-old man in Pandan Indah, Ampang yesterday.

“After being interrogated by the police, he brought the team to Plaza Cheras where a 52-year-old foreign man was arrested.

“Police also seized 21 counterfeit iPhone 6s, an original iPhone 6s and an original iPhone 4s from the second man,” he said, adding they also confiscated a Honda City used by the first suspect.
