‘Thaipusam Spraying Group’ creator arrested

z2.jpg

Police have arrested the creator of the controversial “Thaipusam Spraying Group” that threatened to spray paint women who dressed “inappropriately” during the Hindu festival next month.

The Star quoted Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat as saying the 29-year-old man from Seberang Jaya, Penang, was arrested about 9.20pm yesterday.

“We have applied to remand the suspect to help with our investigations,” Abdul Samah reportedly said at the Selangor police headquarters today.

The group was started by one Henry Barnabas on Facebook, and to date, has more than 680 members.

It carried a picture of purportedly “inappropriate” saree blouses as examples of clothing to avoid and warned those who wore such clothes to the Thaipusam festival would be sprayed with aerosol paint.

On his personal page, Barnabas had claimed the group was founded to protect Hindu rituals and Indian culture.

He also blamed women for “behaving like call girls.”

With police control, no clash of chariots during Thaipusam

Susan Loone

The Penang Hindu Endowment Board (PHEB) is unfazed over a possible clash of chariots on Thaipusam day as the police have stepped in to deal with the matter.

PHEB chairperson P Ramasamy claimed its Golden Chariot is the official one and would lead the procession during the Feb 9 religious festival.

The PHEB had been at loggerheads with the Nattukotai Chettiar community, which has been organising the silver chariot procession during Thaipusam on the island for about 160 years.

But Ramasamy claimed that the community members are foreigners who have been collecting funds which are not used for the benefit of the local people.

“It was agreed in a meeting with the police yesterday, the PHEB and the Chettiars would manage and organise their respective chariots separately.

“The police will provide the security to ensure that both the chariots run smoothly.

Abduction, assault for criticising Thaipusam procession

January 13, 2017

Former Hindu Youth Organisation deputy president claims the incident is related to his criticism of the introduction of the golden chariot procession for Thaipusam.

PETALING JAYA: A man, who last week posted an audio clip on WhatsApp warning the Penang Hindu Endowment Board not to run down the chettiars, claims he was abducted and assaulted by three men, then taken on a terror ride around Bukit Mertajam.

Former Hindu Youth Organisation (HYO) deputy president P Rajendran, 55, said he believed the incident was related to his criticism of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board over the introduction of the golden chariot procession for Thaipusam, reported The Star Online.

“I came to this conclusion after listening to the men’s conversations in the car and at several places,” he said at the Central Seberang Prai police district station after lodging a report yesterday.

The news portal reported that Rajendran had posted an audio clip on WhatsApp in which he warned board chairman P Ramasamy, who is Penang Deputy Chief Minister II, and two other board officials against interfering in religious affairs. He also ordered them to stop running down the chettiars.

The audio clip went viral, resulting in others criticising him through audio clips they posted too.

Rajendran, who is also the former Penang HYO chairman, said he was waiting for his friend at a fast-food outlet in Permatang Pauh at 12.30pm on Tuesday when three men approached him.

“They assaulted me and dragged me into a car. They took me to the Seberang Prai Municipal Council headquarters in Bandar Perda.

“Along the way, they assaulted me again and warned me not to talk bad about a senior DAP leader and the golden chariot,” he claimed.

According to Rajendran, he was made to sit on a bench at the council where a drama was staged as if he was being assaulted for cheating some people, and the incident was recorded on video.

He claimed he was repeatedly assaulted at a car park and then at a fast food outlet near a shopping complex in Bukit Mertajam.

Rajendran said he managed to jump out of the vehicle near Taman Bayu Mutiara in Bukit Tengah.

“They chased me, but I managed to escape. I called a friend and he took me to the Bukit Mertajam Hospital where I was admitted for observation,” the portal quoted Rajendran as saying.

Thaipusam in Penang — ‘a clash of chariots’

January 12, 2017

Lord Murugan temple’s new chariot is to correct ‘injustice’ done to locals, says Penang Hindu Endowments Board chairman P Ramasamy.

GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Chettiars have refused to have their silver Thaipusam chariot run together with the hilltop Murugan Temple’s new golden chariot on the eve of Thaipusam Day, which falls on Feb 9.

The Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), which manages the hilltop temple, said the inaugural golden chariot would now leave at 5am, 90 minutes before the Chettiars’ silver chariot at 6.30am.

Board chairman P Ramasamy disclosed this following a meeting with the police chiefs yesterday, where the PHEB handed an olive branch to the Chettiars as an offer of reconciliation.

“Sadly, at yesterday’s meeting, the Chettiars refused to cooperate with the board. That goes to reveal their real selfish motives.

“The PHEB had asked for all the chariots to run at the same time, but were refused any form of coordination or cooperation,” Ramasamy said at a press conference in Komtar today.

However, he said police had assured the board of their full cooperation to ensure both chariots run smoothly on Thaipusam.

Wanita MIC to lodge report against Thaipusam Spraying Group

PETALING JAYA: Wanita MIC will be lodging police reports against the Thaipusam Spraying Group.

“We are aghast with a Facebook group’s warning about spraying ‘inappropriately’ dressed Hindu women with paint during Thaipusam,” said Wanita MIC leader Datuk Mohana Muniandy.

“This group should not take the law in their hands under the guise of religion.

“Being misogynistic and coming up with distorted ideas on undermining women should not be allowed in this era,” she said in a statement Monday.

She said that while temples have dress codes that everyone has to follow, it is “utterly despicable” to plan to insult women publicly.

“We are living in a community where a woman should be measured by her intelligence and hard work and not by the length of her clothing,” added Mohana.

She also said that Wanita MIC hopes police will take stern action against those who plan to spray-paint women.

Thaipusam group out to spray paint on ‘inappropriately dressed’ women

PETALING JAYA: A Facebook group has warned Hindu women to expect being sprayed with paint should they be “inappropriately dressed” at Thaipusam events.

“Thaipusam Spraying Group” page creator, Henry Barnabas, posted pictures revealing the backs of women donning different sarees with a comment: “Advance warning to Hindu female patrons coming to Thaipusam festival, beware of being sprayed with aerosal paint if found inappropriate dressed…”

The pictures showed the backs of women wearing designer saree blouses.

On his personal Facebook page, Barnabas slammed women from the Karutthu Kannamaa group for “acting innocent like Lebanese porn queen Mia Khalifa in a saree”.

He pleaded for people to share their knowledge on the meaning of Thaipusam, saying people should be aware as to why rituals and cultures have to be protected.

The Karutthu Kannamaa group had earlier slammed the warning on dressing appropriately on Thaipusam.

“Why has religion reduced to what women wear all the time?

“Women’s dressing is harmless – it doesn’t disturb anyone, doesn’t disrupt the rituals and doesn’t impede devotion,” the group said.

Facebook page Unnekku 7.30 Arambam also reposted the same warning which have drawn criticisms from netizens. The post went viral with 1,418 shares since last Friday.

Group warned against spray-painting women on Thaipusam

z11.jpg

PETALING JAYA: Police today warned the public against behaving in a manner that can threaten the peace during religious ceremonies, singling out a group that has warned they will spray paint on women who dressed inappropriately at next month’s Thaipusam celebration.

A group of vigilantes behind the Facebook page called the “Thaipusam Spraying Group”, have threatened to use aerosol spray paint on women, including those who wear the saree (Indian traditional dress for women) with their backs exposed.

Accompanying the warning were pictures of saree blouse designs that the group deemed inappropriate.

“Advance Warning to Hindu Female Patrons coming to Thaipusam festival, beware of being sprayed with Aerosal paint if found inappropriately dressed”, said the group in its “about the page” column.

Federal police Corporate Communications Head ACP Asmawati Ahmad told FMT the post could be considered a crime, punishable under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, or Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of network facilities or network services.

“So don’t taint a religious event by doing things that can disrupt public harmony and peace,” she advised.
