Don’t be alarmed by presence of armed cops in public places

Johor police today advised the public including tourists to remain calm and not be alarmed by the presence of armed policemen conducting patrol in several public locations in the state.

Johor police chief Wan Ahmad Najmuddin Mohd said the presence of personnel from the Serious Crime Investigation Department (D9) and the Secret Societies, Gambling and Vice Department (D7) at shopping centres, was aimed at preventing crime and the people should feel more confident instead.

“Orders have been issued to all district police chiefs to step up patrols. We want the people and tourists especially from Singapore, to enjoy their weekends in the state safely and in comfort when shopping,” he told reporters at a Hari Raya feast organised by the Johor police contingent headquarters, in Johor Baharu today.

He said crime prevention patrols would be conducted daily at randomly selected public places before being stepped up further during weekends.

Wan Ahmad said the proactive measure by Johor police was in line with the rapid development in the state especially in Iskandar Malaysia, and the people should see the effort as a positive move to ensure security in the state.

JB malls ramp up security measures in light of terror threats

Shopping malls and popular tourist destinations in Johor are beefing up security to ensure public safety in light of the recent Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) threats.

A Johor Bahru City Square shopping mall official, Ms Joyce Lee, told The Star that the management had been training its staff to be more vigilant.

She said: “We have also set up a standard operating procedure for more effective training and police have been doing frequent rounds in the vicinity.”

She said the mall had about 2.3 million visitors a month last year.

“Our shoppers are a mix of locals and Singaporeans.

“We take the security issue very seriously and constantly monitor the place through closed-circuit television (CCTV) and patrols,” she said.

Sutera Mall centre manager Crystal Soon said they have also been conducting impromptu bomb emergency drills in the mall.

Ms Soon said the exercises were carried out discreetly to avoid panic or chaos, adding that the mall receives about 700,000 visitors a month.

The added security measures come after Malaysian police have said the June 28 blast in a bar in Selangor was the work of Malaysian ISIS militants.

Police assure that tourist spots and public areas are safe

PETALING JAYA: Authorities have denied that various popular tourist spots in the country are being targeted by terrorists.

In Johor Baru, state deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Zakaria Ahmad said the people should not be unduly worried when going to public areas following an article in a Singaporean newspaper which claimed that the city’s malls and tourist destinations were unsafe.

The article, he said, had caused uneasiness among the people here.

He criticised the article’s contents, which gave the perception that the police were not telling the truth or hiding the facts about any possible attack in Johor Baru.

ACP Mohd Zakaria said the police would be on high alert at all times and had placed more officers to patrol public areas, especially shopping malls.

“The increased patrols are done not only during the festive seasons but all year round,” he said after attending a Hari Raya open house hosted by Johor police headquarters’ Traffic Investigations Department here yesterday.

The article has gone viral on social media since it was published on July 10 with many, especially from Johor Baru and Singapore, voicing their concerns.
