S’pore horse-racing community in shock over murder of M’sian jockey

Singapore’s horse-racing community is in shock over the murder of former Kranji-based apprentice jockey Chung Wah Thong in Penang, The Straits Times reported today.
The report said Malaysian Chung, who was 28, rode briefly at the Singapore Turf Club (STC) earlier this year.
The news portal said the STC had yesterday expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family.
Chung, who won 30 races including the Malaysian Group 1 Selangor Gold Cup last year, had relocated to Singapore in January and was indentured to Singaporean trainer Leslie Khoo, said the report.
“It’s so senseless and to lose his son and his mother… makes it even more senseless. WT (Wah Thong) was a quiet boy but he worked hard at the stables,” Khoo was quoted as saying.
Besides Chung, three of his family members were also shot dead at a chicken processing factory in Batu Maung, Penang, early yesterday.
The victims have been identified as Tan Hock Choon, 50, his common law wife Tan Saw Sim, 55, and Chung’s two-year-old son named Ah Bee.

Gift of bike leads to fatal ending for woman
BALIK PULAU: The motorcycle Tan Saw Sim bought for her close relative to travel around ended up being fatal for her.
Instead of riding the bike around, the relative exchanged it for a pistol. Then, in a fit of anger, he shot dead 55-year-old Tan and three others in Batu Maung here.
According to a source, the man had traded in the machine for the pistol and even flaunted the firearm in front of several foreign workers previously, to have photos taken.
It is learnt that the firearm could have been obtained from a neighbouring country, but police forensics officers said they would carry out a test on the bullet shells to determine the source of the weapon.
The man could also be an accused in a case involving the rape and hurting of a 20-year-old Indonesian woman with electricity, a rotan and an iron rod last year.

GEORGE TOWN, July 13 ― A family of four, including a two-year-old girl, was shot dead in an early morning incident at a poultry processing factory on Jalan Batu Maung here today.
Penang police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Datuk Razaruddin Husain identified the victims as factory owner Toh Hock Choon, 50; his wife Tan Saw Sim, 55; and Tan’s son Chung Wah Thong. The toddler was Chung’s daughter.
Razaruddin told reporters at the crime scene that the incident is believed to have happened about 2.45am, following an altercation between the factory owner and another stepson aged 32.
The senior policeman believed the suspect shot the three adults first and turned on the child later when she came to check the commotion.
“We believe when he shot the three victims, the two-year-old heard the commotion and came down the stairs where she too was shot,” he said.
