What is the truth about the Church of the Assumption ‘cancelling’ its interfaith buka puasa do?

5 July 2016

What is the truth?

1. The Assumption Church, PJ, had cancelled the breaking of fast, which had 65 registered guests comprising mostly Muslims and Christians, on its own prerogative as a safety precaution.

The police did not ask the church to do so but police officers had visited the church to warn it of potential trouble over the planned event in Selangor during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

2. The IGP said that no police report has been lodged against the church’s buka puasa event that was slated for Friday last week. Even if there were, the police would not have stopped the event from taking place as there was no reason to do so.

He expressed concern that some quarters may have posed as police officers to dupe the Church of the Assumption into cancelling the event, and put the force in bad light in doing so.

3. Activist Syed Azmi Alhabshe, “The church has CCTV and if the police would like to have it for investigation, I guess they can contact the church…Whether it’s the case of an imposter, well it’s for the police to investigate.”

Cops can contact church on ‘police imposters’, says activist

Published 4 Jul 2016, 11:36 pm

Police can contact the Petaling Jaya church, which came under the spotlight for a breaking fast event last weekend, to see if individuals impersonating police had warned the church to cancel the event, said activist Syed Azmi Alhabshee.

This comes after inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar denied a police report was lodged against the Church of Assumption’s event, prompting the cancellation.

Syed Azmi, who was consulted by the church over the event, said the church did not ask the individuals who claim they were police, nor did they seek a copy of the alleged police report as they took it in good faith.

“The church has CCTV and if the police would like to have it for investigation, I guess they can contact the church.

“The church and I believe in the good faith of our police system and we were surprised over the news.

“Whether it’s the case of an imposter, well it’s up to the police to investigate . For me and the organisers, we are just happy if assistance needed. If not, it’s also okay,” he said.

Khalid denies police stopped interfaith buka puasa do

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar has denied claims that a police report has been lodged against a church’s buka puasa event that was slated for Friday last week.Even if there was, he said the police would not have stopped the event from taking place as there was no reason to do so.

He expressed concern that some quarters may have posed as police officers to dupe the Church of the Assumption into cancelling the event, and put the force in bad light in doing so.

“I don’t know who these policemen were. I am not able to confirm that there was a policeman who went and advise them (to cancel the event). It seems that was (supposed to be) a Muslim policeman and a Christian policeman who went up to the church and advised them to cancel it.

“Well I have been checking it with the Selangor police. We never sent any policeman there, so I don’t know what is going on. So unless the church can tell us who they are, I won’t be able to respond to this.

“And there was no report lodged. I’m afraid that someone is just making up stories saying that there is a police report lodged, went up to the church, told them something, and the church cancelled it,” he told reporters in Kuala Lumpur today.

Previously, activist Syed Azmi Alhabshee claimed that two members of the police had gone to the church to explain that a report had been lodged against the event to be held that night, and there may be group or individuals who want to cause trouble there.

Following that, the church decided to cancel the event.

PETALING JAYA: The prime minister’s brother, banker Nazir Razak, has complimented Assumption Church here for distributing prepared meals for buka puasa yesterday despite cancelling a breaking of fast event at the church hall, on police advice.

Nazir, who is CIMB chairman, posted a screen capture of a news report on his Instagram account and described the distribution of the buka puasa packets as an uplifting story, “especially at a time when forces of communal division and intolerance are being allowed to grow stronger.”

He congratulated “these young ones” who organised the event.

Yesterday, activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi said that the event was called off when the police advised them “that there might be an individual or a group who would cause trouble tonight.”

PJ church nixes interfaith ‘buka puasa’ after police report lodged

By Ida Lim

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — A Catholic church in Petaling Jaya has cancelled an interfaith “buka puasa” event scheduled tonight after a complaint was made to the police.

Activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi confirmed to Malay Mail Online that the Assumption Church, PJ, had cancelled the breaking of fast, which had 65 registered guests comprising mostly Muslims and Christians, on its own prerogative as a safety precaution, and that the police did not ask the church to do so.

Earlier today on his Facebook page, Syed Azmi explained that police officers had visited the church to warn it of potential trouble over the planned event in Selangor during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

“Someone made a police report and two police (one Muslim and one Christians) went to the church nicely and explain that tonight there might be an individual or group who would cause trouble.

“Having weighing all options, the church decided to cancel the event. All in good faith,” wrote Syed Azmi, who was consulted by the church on whether it was following Islamic rules by organising the event to break fast with Muslims.

He told Malay Mail Online that the police had notified the church that a report had been lodged and advised the church to be on their guard.

“I think their intention is very nice. Their intention is just to prevent anything (bad) from happening. They didn’t ask to close, they didn’t ask to cancel the event,” he said.

“The decision to cancel was not by the police. It was by the church and organising team itself,” the activist added.

Interfaith buka puasa at church continues despite police report

Published 1 Jul 2016

An interfaith breaking fast event organised by a church in Petaling Jaya went on tonight despite an earlier cancellation following a police report.

Activist Syed Azmi Alhabshee had earlier posted on Facebook that the dinner, held at the Church of the Assumption, was cancelled after police warned that an individual or group might cause trouble.

“Someone made a police report and two police went to the church nicely and explained that tonight there might be an individual or group who would cause trouble.

“Having weighed all the options, the church decided to cancel the event. All in good faith,” Syed Azmi wrote this evening.

However hours later, other Facebook users began posting that the dinner still continued, albeit with a smaller crowd.

“Despite the hatred and police report, we want to show that true loving Malaysians still exist,” Rayyan Haries posted.

One of the attendees, Joycelyn Lee, said 15 people attended the breaking fast dinner at the church.

“But a lot of people showed their support by turning up and collecting the food the organisers had ordered.

“The total ordered was 65 packs of food but support was so good they ordered more,” Lee told Malaysiakini.
