A 13-hour siege in a park in the port city of Bunbury has ended after police shot an alleged hostage taker with what are reportedly non-lethal ammunition.

Shortly before the siege ended at 7am AWST (9am AEST), a hostage who police say was taken randomly and held in the park overnight walked to a waiting ambulance, leaving police to continue to negotiate with the alleged captor who had been claiming to have explosives.

Police spokesman Luke Eliot told reporters: “The offender is in police custody”.

“Two beanbag rounds were used to subdue the alleged offender, to enable his safe apprehension,” Mr Eliot said.

“His condition is described as fine.

“The hostage was freed several minutes prior to this resolution, and we are awaiting confirmation on his condition.”

Overnight police used a megaphone to communicate with the alleged hostage taker. Heavily-armed Tactical Response Group officers travelled from Perth to the scene, 175km south of the capital.

The man had erected a handwritten banner demanding the release of a WA Crime and Corruption Commission report.

A man who may be armed with explosives has kept a hostage captive and held police at bay for more than five hours in the West Australian city of Bunbury. Police were called to the Koombana Bay area just west of the Bunbury CBD about 6.20pm on Thursday to a report a man had taken a hostage. Police now say they know the identity of the man holding the hostage but have not released his name publicly. The identity of the hostage has also not been released. Local police and members of the WA Police tactical response group have sealed off the area, a tourist precinct which has a marina and holiday accommodation. Advertisement “We have concerns for one person in the vicinity of this man, who we are trying to negotiate with,” WA Police spokesman Sam Dinnison told AAP. It was reported earlier that the man was carrying explosives but Mr Dinnison said it’s not clear how the man is armed. “We still have no confirmation on the reports of explosives going around the media,” Mr Dinnison said.
