Zaid criticises Najib’s lack of grasp on Low Yat incident

July 14, 2015

Zaid Ibrahim points out that the prime minister cannot differentiate between a crime and a racially charged situation.

KUALA LUMPUR: The incident at Low Yat Plaza over the weekend was not solely about the crime of theft but a reflection of the racial politics that Najib Razak’s leadership has allowed, said Zaid Ibrahim.

zaid_twt_600The former law minister also said the prime minister did not know how to differentiate between a crime and a racially charged situation if one went by his instruction to Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar to ensure that the ruckus at Low Yat Plaza over the weekend did not recur.

“Najib’s grasp of things never fails to amaze me. Him telling IGP that such incident as Low Yat should not recur is hard to follow,” he said on Twitter yesterday.

“If it’s a crime and nothing more, IGP could not possibly prevent that,” stressing instead that the real issue was racial politics which Najib had to take the blame for.

“If mobsters behaved like racists thugs and spread false news then racial politics is the cause. IGP should warn Najib ‘Dont let it recur’,” he said instead of Najib warning the IGP that theft should not recur.

Najib warns that Sedition Act will be used against those who destroy racial harmony

PETALING JAYA • Prime Minister Najib Razak said the tough Sedition Act will be used against those who destroyed racial harmony in an incident at Low Yat Plaza on Sunday where five people were injured in a brawl that has raised concern about fragile race relations in Malaysia.

Police, who have arrested 19 people, called the incident a “riot”.

“People should not create racial hatred via the Internet or messaging apps on their phones,” Mr Najib said in a Chinese statement on his Facebook page yesterday.

“I have ordered the Home Ministry and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to monitor them thoroughly and, at the same time, I will use the relevant Acts, especially the Sedition Act, against those who destroy racial harmony,” he added.

Google translation:

I have instructed the IGP to take action to prevent such incidents occurring in Plaza Low Yat yesterday from happening again.

This should be viewed as a criminal rather than a problem of racism. This case should be handed over to the police and action will be taken against those who violate the law.

There are also irresponsible on social media that warms the issue with incorrect perspective. I see there are pictures that have nothing to do with this case already loaded in social media.

We need to avoid mob psychology and check the facts.
