‘Heavy-handed police action bad for business’
The heavy-handed approach of the police in bringing some 30 Low Yat Plaza traders for investigation has scared off traders and customers, a local trade association said.
Bukit Bintang Hawkers and Petty Traders Association chief See Foo Hoong said the traders have suffered business losses over the weekend brawl, which may also have led consumers to think that the mall is a sanctuary for forged items.
To add salt into the wound, See said, the police action has exacerbated business at Low Yat Plaza, he said.
“They (police) are a bit too much, making consumers to think the mall is problematic. The traders are perturbed and do not know when the fiasco will be over.
“The brawl has caused the traders to suffer losses. The customers dare not go there for shopping.
“The police action has scared off the traders as well. We hope the police can be more fair and mild in their work.
“Let the traders have a rest,” See, who operates a handphone shop in nearby Jalan Alor, told a media conference in Low Yat Plaza late this evening.
Speaking on behalf of the cellphone traders at the mall, See said should the business drop, the Low Yat traders will have a difficult time, since the monthly rental is expensive, between RM10,000 and RM20,000 per stall.
Also present were Gerakan national public service and complaints bureau chief Wilson Lau and Gerakan Youth deputy chief Andy Yo.
…
Meanwhile, Gerakan’s Lau criticised the police for using a heavy-handed approach to record statements from the mall traders.
The traders should not be treated like criminals, Lau added.
“I hope the IGP and the police can do their investigations in a fair manner.”

Swindling is part of Chinese trading culture, Muslim group claims
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — While emotions remain raw over the weekend riot in Low Yat Plaza, a Muslim group yesterday accused ethnic Chinese traders of adopting swindling as part of their business “culture”.
The Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM) claimed that ethnic Chinese businesses regularly cheat Malay consumers as a legitimate way for them to get extra profit. “We don’t deny that it is really their practice, it has become their culture even in trading,”
PPIM president Datuk Nadzim Johan said as quoted by the website of Islamist group Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma). “What more, they feel that with swindling they can earn. Unfortunately, those who always got conned are the Malays,” he added. He did not provide any data or statistics to back up his assertion.

Story of friendship between Low Yat phone buyer and seller goes viral
PETALING JAYA: A heart-warming account of friendship has emerged in the aftermath of the Low Yat Plaza incident, with a post by a Facebook user who came out to defend a mobile phone seller at the shopping complex. “This man’s name is Desmond. It’s his nickname. I have bought handphones from him for a very long time and he always sells quality items,” said Fais Al-Hajari in the photo, which was shared on the Siakap Keli Facebook group at 5pm on Monday. Fais added in the caption for his photo that although he had, at times, bought mobile phones from other retailers, Desmond continued to smile at him and treat him well. “This good relationship has remained over the last eight years. Other handphone sellers in this dream plaza, the majority of them Chinese, are also good to me. “The secret? They don’t cheat me and I don’t steal their goods. We have mutual respect for each other and are supportive. The world is peaceful,” said Fais. http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Nation/2015/07/14/Heart-warming-Man-Handphone/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter — 13 July 2015 WILL OPS TULEN BE EFFECTIVE TODAY WHEN MOST OF THE SHOPS ARE CLOSED? Low Yat Plaza: Not different, just empty http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/304966

To say that Low Yat Plaza is slightly different today is perhaps an understatement. Most of the shops at this popular electronic goods mall today remained closed, despite one worker claiming that the mall’s management has said it may issue warnings to shop owners who are not open for business today. The closing of most of the shops at the mall today is not surprising, after what occurred last night. A worker at one of the electronics shops at Low Yat Plaza told Malaysiakini that the mall management said would issue those outlets that do not open their shops today with warning letters. “I told them that most of the shops are already closed. They (the management) said those shops would have to tanggung sendiri (face whatever action). “So we have no choice but to open our shop because we don’t want to get any threats,” he said. … However, the management of Low Yat Plaza, when met by Malaysiakini, said it had to reserve its comment on the matter. “We can’t make any statement now because it will interfere with the investigations. We will issue a press statement as soon as possible,” said an officer with the mall management. http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/304966 —
Shops at Low Yat Plaza remain closed today, as traders are said to be still cautious over last night’s fights.
