Famous Kayu Nasi Kandar restaurant in Bukit Jambul raided for selling roti telor at RM2.50!

Someone told me on Facebook that he ate roti telor a few days ago at KLIA1 and paid RM17.

When it rains, it pours!

It’s getting lots of press. BAD press. The latest bad news is the complaint, with receipt, that its Petaling Jaya branch charged RM11 for roti tissue.

However, look at the height and size of THIS roti tissue!

RM11 for this.

Yes, the menu says that it’s RM11 for a roti tissue.

Angry at GST but blaming me, says restaurant owner

Kayu Restaurant owner gets the stick for RM20 dish of ladies fingers and RM2.50 for roti telur.

GEORGE TOWN: A nasi kandar restaurant owner in Bukit Jambul, hauled up twice for charging high prices, has defended the move by citing customers’ anger over the Goods and Services Tax (GST) as the main reason behind their complaints, the Malay Mail reported.

Burhan Muhamad, the owner of Kayu Nasi Kandar Restaurant, said the complaints of overcharging have come about because customers who were angry over the GST were directing their anger at his restaurant instead.

The Kayu Nasi Kandar restaurant is faced not only with being raided for its RM2.50 roti telor, it is also accused of charging RM20 for 5 ladyfingers!

A picture of the receipt, dated Saturday, went viral in social media when it was posted on Sunday and showed that 5 pieces of ladyfinger costs the customer RM20.

Overpriced food caused by human error, says restaurant owner

GEORGE TOWN: The popular ‘nasi kandar’ restaurant, Kayu Nasi Kandar in Bukit Jambul, has clarified that the price of its ladyfingers on a receipt, which went viral over social media recently, was caused by human error.

Its managing director Burhan Mohamed said the right pricing for the ladyfingers in the restaurant was RM2 for five pieces and not RM20 as posted in the Internet. “Our cashier made an error, instead of RM2, he mistakenly punched RM20 for the item,” he told a press conference at the restaurant today.

Burhan apologised over the matter and hoped the affected customer would return to claim back the balance amount. “We are doing long term business, we have regulars, we don’t simply charge extraordinary prices to our customers,” he said.

Tony Pua, “While the Ministry of Domestic Trade, (Cooperatives and Consumerism) attempts to punish the restaurants raising the prices of roti canai by 30 sen, the Najib government embraces the RM770 million windfall profits for the mobile telcos.”

‘PM hypocrite for blaming price hikes on traders’

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua has called Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak a “hypocrite” for trying to lay blame solely on traders for price hikes following the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Pua said while traders have become Putrajaya’s target to deflect heavy criticism over the controversial tax, the government has given a very different treatment to the telecommunication industry.

He pointed out that Putrajaya endorsed the collusion by telecommunication giants to impose the six percent tax on prepaid card users even though they had previously absorbed the cost under the now abolished Sales and Services Tax (SST).

“Why is the BN government helping these highly profitable companies make an additional estimated RM770 million in profits?

“While the Ministry of Domestic Trade, (Cooperatives and Consumerism) attempts to punish the restaurants raising the prices of roti canai by 30 sen, the Najib government embraces the RM770 million windfall profits for the mobile telcos.

” There can be no bigger unscrupulous profiteering exercise in the country today as a result of the GST implementation, and Najib chooses to be a blatant hypocrite to fully endorse the burden to be placed on the man-on-the-street,” said Pua in a statement today.

Najib: Traders raise prices, I get the blame

May 23, 2015
GOPENG: The action of some traders who exploited the Goods and Services Tax has burdened the people when the tax system was implemented on April 1, said prime minister Najib Razak.
He said the traders should have reduced the prices after Sales and Services Tax was abolished but they did not do so and instead took the opportunity to raise prices by 6% using the GST as an excuse.
“The GST issue is caused by traders, these traders are evil, they are not responsible. “It is not the government, we have other policies. When traders exploit the situation, the people blame the government and prime minister,” he said.
He urged the authorities to step up enforcement and act more firmly to take errant traders to court. “Sue them (traders), consumers please inform us of their offences so that we can take action,” he said.

GEORGE TOWN: A famous nasi kandar restaurant in Bukit Jambul was raided Saturday by the Enforcement Division of the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry

State Enforcement deputy head Chin Ching Chung said the inspection was carried out at 10.40am after the department received a complaint that the price of roti telur prior to the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) had been RM1.80.

Chin said further investigations revealed that the price of ‘roti canai telur’ at the restaurant had been raised several times before April from RM1.80 to RM2.20 and the latest to RM2.50 after GST.
