No green light for Penang Sky Cab project if Penangites object, Guan Eng says

By Opalyn Mok

SEBERANG PERAI, April 17 ― The proposed Penang Sky Cab project, a cable car system linking the island and the mainland, will be cancelled if it is widely objected by Penangites, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said today.

The estimated RM300 million project will also be shelved if it fails the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Lim said.

“Overall the feedback on the proposed project has been positive, but we have also received some slight negative feedback concerned over land reclamation and its environmental impact,” Lim told a press conference at the Seberang Perai Municipal Council here today.

The Penang chief minister said the proposed project, undertaken by Penang Sentral, will not involve massive land reclamation works.

“They will only build nine towers in the sea for the cable cars so it would not massively impact the sea and the environment,” he said.

The proposed project is currently under the “exploratory stage” and it may not be implemented if Penang Sentral does not get the necessary approvals, said Lim.

The project will be a joint effort between the state government and Penang Sentral.

Lim Guan Eng noted that Penang Sentral was a federal agency under the Northern Corridor Economic Region which was a government plan to accelerate growth and economy initiated by former premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

By 2018, Penangites would be able to ride a ‘Sky Cab’, an alternative public transport mode to link the island to Butterworth on the mainland.

The cable-car system stretching a distance of three kilometres  or about 15 minutes would be able to cater for about 1,000 passengers per hour (one way).

The project, however, is subject to the Penang government and Penang Sentral Transportation Hub agreeing to implement it.

In announcing the proposal today, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said the Sky Cab station on the island will be located at Gat Lebuh Noordin.

“We have already entered into the advanced exploratory stage and hope this federal project can be completed and operational by 2018,” Lim said at a press conference.

“It is quite a sustainable and concrete project proposal,” he added.

Penang Sky Cab is the proposed Penang Cable Car which links Penang Sentral at Butterworth to Gat Leboh Nordin on the island. The 3-KM proposed cable car project is a collaboration between Penang Sentral and the Penang State Government.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng revealed the project to members of the press today at Komtar. He said, “We have been working hard on this project since last year and consulted all the parties involved including the Penang Port Commission. For the public benefit, we want to work with every party to improve the public transport system as it has synergistic benefits for all.”

“This is like a 5-in-1 public transport as the Sky Cab will connect the people to the mainland train, taxi, buses and ferry services. This will be a convenient, fast and safe mode of transport,” he added.

If all goes well, Penang will have the Sky Cab ready by 2018.

Penang Sky Cab study to be completed in five to six months

By Sangeetha Amarthalingam / The Edge Financial Daily   | April 17, 2015 : 10:06 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR: Penang Sentral Sdn Bhd (PSSB), tasked to develop the RM2.05 billion Penang Sentral mixed project with an integrated transport hub in the northern state, will take about five to six months to complete a study on the proposed Penang Sky Cab linking Penang island to the mainland.

A PSSB spokesman told The Edge Financial Daily that any matter in connection with the mooted cable car system would be finalised once the study is completed.

On Wednesday, Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng announced that PSSB was in the final stages of exploration to build a 3.66km cable car service linking Gat Lebuh Noordin on the island to the Penang Sentral transport hub in Butterworth.

Guan Eng said the proposal made by the state to PSSB was an additional project to the RM2 billion integrated public transportation network that began construction last year.

In a statement yesterday, PSSB said the study was to ascertain the functionalities and design parameters of the proposed Sky Cab linking both the locations across the North Channel.

“We wish to inform that a study is currently underway to ascertain the functionalities. A study is being conducted in connection with the mooted cable car linkage as mentioned.

“This study will at least take five to six months to complete before any matters in connection with the Sky Cab proposal are finalised,” it added.
