Non-Muslim Form Three student, Britney Nicole, was barred from attending classes after donning a baju kurung to school.
She was told that non-Muslims could not wear the baju kurung.
Later, the principal said it has a misunderstanding, that she had not buttoned up; he insisted that the school allowed non-Muslims to wear the baju burung.
However, the school rules state that non-Muslims are not allowed to wear the baju kurung!

Twist to baju kurung issue — so who’s telling the truth here?

The school rules at SMK Seri Mutiara in Cheras clearly state that non-Muslim students must only wear the pinafore.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 22, 2015:
There is an interesting “twist” to the ban on baju kurung at a school in Cheras here.
It has come to light that the school rule book clearly states that non-Muslim students should only wear the pinafore.
The Rakyat Post has obtained the rule book from a concerned parent of a student in the school embroiled in the saga — SMK Seri Mutiara in Cheras — that clearly states so.
On page six of the rule book, it is stated: “Semua murid perempuan bukan Islam diwajibkan memakai Pinafore Tunic dan kemeja sekolah/baju putih” (All non-Muslim female students are required to wear Pinafore Tunic and school/white shirt).
The book, compulsory for every student at RM2 each, was bought by the student at the start of the new school session earlier this year.
“I am showing the book to set the record straight.
“I hope the authorities will check their facts before issuing any denials.”

…
The school denied there was such a ruling and said it was all about the buttons.
Mohd Amir Abdul Ghani, the principal, attributed the issue to a miscommunication and misinterpretation of information by the student’s parents.
He said part of the issue was because some students refused to button up their baju kurung all the way up.
Mohd Amir, who is the head of the school’s Parent-Teacher Association, also issued apologies following the issue.

So outrageous. Student not allowed to wear a baju kurung because she isn’t Malay. Ridiculous. pic.twitter.com/t3mvGrzuq9

READERS’ COMMENTS: The latest explanation given was that she did not wear the baju kurung “properly” i.e. did not button up the buttons!
If this is true, then why not just ask her to button up and move on? Why ask her to go home and change into a pinafore?
For the record, there is only one single button on a baju kurung! – TNA
MusaNg: A stupidly racist headmaster, pure and simple.
Amir Kazan: In order to educate the children, educators sometimes have to think like a child. It is called empathy, my fellow educators.
Please use common sense instead of conforming to protocols all the time. Try putting your feet in our children’s shoes. You will see a difference.
The latest incident has gone a way too far.

QUICK TAKE: When was it ever a school regulation that a non-Muslim girl is not permitted to wear baju kurung to school?
This is the first time such a trivial matter over a school uniform has been raised publicly.
The question which must be asked is whether this was an Education Ministry ruling or just one implemented by the authorities of the school concerned.
In a Rakyat Post report on Jan 14, an allegation has surfaced that a public secondary school in Cheras has barred a new Form Three student from entering class as she was wearing a baju kurung which the school claimed was against the dress code.
The student’s father, Lawrence Jayaraj, alleged that he was told by the school that only Malay Muslim students were allowed to wear baju kurung while non-Muslim and non-Malay students could not.

In an immediate response, Deputy Education Minister P Kamalanathan pointed out that there were some 10,000 schools under the ministry and sometimes principals made policies without checking with the ministry.
He said that if the matter is not resolved by the District Education Office or the State Education Department, he would personally get to the bottom of the matter.
Perhaps Kamalanathan should take immediate action instead of waiting for the district and state education officers to resolve the matter. Government officers have been known to adopt the “passing the buck” syndrome when handling issues they consider “sensitive”.
