ANTI CHARLIE HEBDO PROTESTS

The weekly’s new issue with a drawing of Muhammad, a tear rolling down his cheek and holding a placard that says “Je Suis Charlie’’ — a saying that has swept France and the world — was an act of defiance in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack at the paper’s Paris office that killed 12 people, including editors, cartoonists and two policemen.

Demonstrations were organized throughout Pakistan after midday Friday prayers and almost all of them ended without incident.

Charlie Hebdo Protest Turns Violent in Pakistan

  • Men move a policeman by stretcher who was wounded after being hit by stones during a protest organized by Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (JTI), the student wing of religious political party Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), against the satirical French weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, Jan. 16, 2015.
Islamist parties in Pakistan on Friday staged rallies against the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo for publishing cartoons depicting Islam’s  Prophet Muhammad.  Pakistan’s parliament a day earlier unanimously approved a resolution condemning what it called the “blasphemous caricatures.” Under Pakistani laws, blasphemy carries the death penalty.

The government has condemned the January 7 attack on the Charlie Hebdo offices in Paris. But many in overwhelmingly-Muslim Pakistan view the magazine’s caricatures of Muhammad as a profound insult to Islam.

In Islam, visual representations of all the prophets and messengers of God are prohibited in order to prevent idolatry, and the worshipping of the images themselves rather than God.

KARACHI — A rally by Pakistani students against a French satirical weekly’s latest publication of a Prophet Mohammad cartoon turned violent yesterday (Jan 16), with police firing warning shots and water cannons to disperse the demonstration. A photographer with the Agence France-Presse was shot and wounded in the melee.

Protesters took to the streets after midday prayers in the port city of Karachi, the eastern city of Lahore and the capital of Islamabad to protest Charlie Hebdo’s publishing this week of another cover depicting the prophet — an act deemed insulting to many followers of Islam.

Pakistan has condemned the Paris massacre but many people in this overwhelmingly Muslim country view the magazine’s prophet caricatures as a profound insult, and there have been scattered protests against the magazine around the country.

Yesterday, clashes erupted in Karachi when the protesters started heading toward the French consulate. The protesters began throwing stones at the police, who tried to push them back with water cannons and tear gas.

Karachi police officer, Mr Naseer Tanoly, said some of the protesters were armed and opened fire on police first. He said the police fired into the air to disperse the crowd.

The protesters were mostly students affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami political party.

In Islamabad, about 1,000 people gathered after Friday prayers to condemn the magazine for what they called blasphemous images of the prophet. The demonstrators carried signs that read “Shame on Charlie Hebdo” and “If you are Charlie, then I am Kouachi” — referring to the brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi who were behind the massacre at the weekly and who had told survivors they were sent by al Qaeda in Yemen.

COMMENT BY CHINA: NOT UNEXPECTED

Charlie Hebdo Attack Shows Need for Press Limits, Xinhua Says

The deadly terrorist attack on the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo shows the need to impose limits on freedom of the press, China’s official news agency argued on Sunday, as more than three million people marched in anti-terror rallies across France.

“Charlie Hebdo had on multiple occasions been the target of protests and even revenge attacks on account of its controversial cartoons,” the Xinhua news agency commentary said, adding that the magazine had been criticized in the past for being “both crude and heartless” in its attacks on religion.

“What they seem not to realize is that world is diverse, and there should be limits on press freedom,” it continued.

Map shows every attack on French Muslims since

Since the terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, the country’s Muslim community, despite universally and repeatedly condemning the attack, has come under a wave of misguided “reprisal” attacks.

The attacks are being mapped by a respected British anti-Islamophobia group, Tell MAMA UK (MAMA stands for measuring anti-Muslim attacks). This map details the incidents since they began, mere hours after the Charlie Hebdo attack:

Attacks on French Muslims from January 6 to January 10 (Tell MAMA UK)

Attacks on French Muslims from January 6 to January 10 (Tell MAMA UK)

According to reports by AFP and others, the attacks have included:

  • Three training grenades thrown at a mosque in Le Man; a bullet hole was also found in one of the mosque windows
  • A bomb blast at a restaurant adjacent to and associated with a mosque in Villefranche-sur-Saone
  • Gunshots fired at a mosque in Port-la-Nouvelle
  • A boar’s head and entrails were left outside an Islamic prayer center in Corsica with a note: “Next time it will be one of your heads.”

The attacks have been relatively small-scale, especially compared to the Charlie Hebdo massacre and subsequent violence committed by its apparent culprits.

Khairy: Charlie Hedbo unity rally ‘nauseating

Published: January 12, 2015 02:24 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 — The worldwide rally in solidarity with France over the Charlie Hebdo slayings was “nauseating“, Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin said today in yet tweet another against the French satirical weekly.

“I condemn again the Charlie Hebdo murders but the unity march was nauseating,“ he said on Twitter using his @Khairykj account.

The Malaysian youth and sports minister’s remark drew mixed responses from Twitter users.

“@Khairykj i find you nauseating. i vomited in my mouth, in your honour,“ said one Twitter user @eshxy.

Another user, William Calvin asked Khairy in jest as why he felt the rally was nauseating.

“Oh right. I forgot. Your party is racist,“ Calvin said.

A number of them agreed with the Umno minister — saying that there should be unity marches against Israel’s on-going persecution against the Palestinian people.

Last week, Khairy had mocked the need to protect “racist, xenophobic, bigoted” satire such as contained in the French satirical weekly.

“What happened in Paris, the murders, this of course is not Islam,” he had said.

shooting: Veteran Algerian militant hails killings, urges similar attacks

DUBAI (Reuters) – Veteran Algerian militant and former Al-Qaeda fighter Mokhtar Belmokhtar praised a deadly assault on a French satirical newspaper and urged Muslims in the West to carry out similar attacks, a monitoring service said on Monday.

In a statement distributed on militant online forums, Belmokhtar said such strikes were justified by what he called Western aggression, including French military action, against Islamist armed groups in Africa’s Sahel-Sahara region.

The SITE monitoring service said his statement was distributed by the al Mourabitoun Islamist group, formed in 2013 by fighters loyal to Belmokhtar and a militant armed force known as the Movement for Unity and Jihad in West Africa.

Hackers claiming to be with the group Anonymous say they have hacked a jihadist website in retaliation for the terror attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The website ansar-alhaqq.net, a French jihadist site, currently redirects to Duck Duck Go, a search engine. Hackers using the Twitter handle @OpCharlieHebdo claimed responsibility.

Anonymous also named dozens of Twitter accounts that the hacktivist group says belong to jihadists.

The hackers posted the Twitter handles on Pastebin, a website that lets people post information anonymously online.

DID PERKASA’S IBRAHIM ALI JUSTIFY THE CHARLIE HEBDO MASSACRE?

‘This is what happens when you insult the Prophet’

According to Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali, the Charlie Hebdo attack in France was the result when people insult Prophet Muhammad, and thus hurt the feelings of Muslims.

“When the French government did not do anything (on the publication of caricatures against the Prophet), those insulted took the law into their own hands.

“Although we condemn the attack, this is what happens when you insult or get involved in others’ religious affairs,” he said in a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

Ibrahim taken to task for alleged defence of Paris terror attacks

PETALING JAYA: There is no justification in taking innocent lives, as happened in the Paris terror attacks.

Referring to Perkasa chairman Datuk Ibrahim Ali’s seeming defence of the suspects in the attacks, MCA Religious Harmony Bureau chairman Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker said: “Ibrahim should emulate Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak and Putrajaya in sincerely condemning the massacres, rather than giving an excuse for vigilantism and lawlessness.”

Ti called on the police to haul up Ibrahim for questioning, claiming that he “seems to be promoting violence and slaughter of innocents”.

He also advised the public to ignore Ibrahim’s “bigoted ranting as none other than a xenophobic pursuit of publicity which he craves and which the media gives him”.

shooting: Bloodshed a possible prelude to wave of attacks in , says paper

BERLIN (AFP) – The bloodshed in France could signal the start of a wave of attacks in Europe, according to communications by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria leaders intercepted by United States intelligence, German newspaper Bild reported on Sunday.

Shortly after the attacks in Paris, the US National Security Agency had intercepted communications in which leaders of the militant group announced the next wave of attacks, the tabloid said, citing unnamed sources in the US intelligence services.

Paris was cited as being the signal for a series of attacks on other European cities, including Rome, the newspaper said, adding however that a concrete plan of attack was not known.

The US services also had information that Cherif and Said Kouachi, the brothers who carried out the massacre at French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, had contacts in the Netherlands, Bild said.

Slain Paris shooter and fugitive lover holidayed in Malaysia, neighbours claim

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 10 —  Amedy Coulibaly, the gunman from yesterday’s deadly Paris supermarket siege and his now-fugitive girlfriend, Hayat Boumeddiene, had once vacationed here in Malaysia, according to their neighbours in Bagneux, France.

Coulibaly was killed by French police after he took customers at supermarket in Vincennes hostage while armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle. He was suspected ally of the Kouachi brothers who perpetrated a deadly massacre at the office of French weekly Charlie Hebdo.

Boumeddiene is wanted by French authorities in connection with the slaying of a policewoman.

The couple’s link to Malaysia is the latest in an unenviable series of connections that the country has with high-profile terrorism incidents.

Last month, it was revealed that Iranian gunman Man Haron Monis who kept Sydney gripped in a deadly hostage crisis had fled to Malaysia after committing “violent” crimes in Iran before seeking asylum in Australia.

Malaysia was also reportedly the venue of an al Qaeda summit in 2000, during which members of the terrorist network — hosted by Malaysian Army captain Yazid Sufaat — laid the groundwork for future attacks such as the pivotal September 11, 2001 Twin Towers incident in the US.

PETALING JAYA: Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar confirmed that the couple who was involved in the fatal hostage situation in Paris “never entered Malaysia.”

The Inspector-General of Police tweeted via @KBAB51: “Paris attack – Checks by @PDRMsia resulted, Amedy and his wife Hayat have never entered M’sia.”

Foreign media reports are claiming that the couple – Amedy Coulibaly and Hayat Boumeddiene (pix) – had once travelled to Malaysia for holiday without giving specific dates of their arrival.

Coulibaly was gunned down by police after he had taken several people hostage at a supermarket in Paris on Friday. Boumeddiene managed to escape during the shoot-out with police.

PARIS – An armed man took several hostages and one person was wounded in a shootout at a kosher supermarket in eastern Paris on Friday, police sources said, denying an earlier media report that two people were dead.

It was not immediately clear whether there was a link between that gunman and the two suspects wanted for 12 killings at the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly on Wednesday.

However a police source said the hostage-taker resembled the man suspected of killing a policewoman in a southern suburb of Paris on Thursday. That man in turn is believed to be a member of the same jihadist group as the two Charlie Hebdo suspects.

The exact number of hostages taken was unclear. Local media spoke of at least five. The police source said the man was equipped with automatic weapons.

Police sources said there was a “connection” between this gunman and the brothers accused of carrying out France’s bloodiest massacre in half a century at the Charlie Hebdo offices.

Dammartin and New shootings: Twin hostage dramas as massacre suspects cornered

PARIS (AFP, REUTERS) – French elite forces surrounded two brothers suspected of slaughtering 12 people in the Islamist massacre at Charlie Hebdo as a fresh shooting and hostage drama erupted at a kosher supermarket on Friday in eastern Paris.

Snipers were deployed on roofs and helicopters swooped low over a small printing business in the town of Dammartin-en-Goele, only 12km from Paris’s main Charles de Gaulle airport.

Meanwhile, another hostage drama was unfolding in the east of the French capital. A man already suspected of gunning down a policewoman on Thursday was thought to be behind a new attack on the kosher grocery store, with at least five hostages taken and at least one injured.

The mugshots of the man and a woman, believed to be his accomplice, were released by police soon after the attack. They were named as Amedy Coulibaly, 32, and Hayat Boumeddiene, 26

The Porte de Vincennes area in eastern Paris was locked down with people told to stay indoors and police streaming into the streets.

PARIS (AFP) – At least two people were killed and another one injured when a gunman opened fire at a kosher grocery store in eastern Paris on Friday and took at least five people hostage, sources said.

“There are at least two dead, maybe more, but for the moment we don’t know,” one source said.

A police source said the suspect was linked to two brothers who massacred 12 people at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo on Wednesday.

The mugshots of the man and a woman, believed to be his accomplice, were released by police soon after the attack.

Shooting at satirical magazine leaves 11 people dead & 10 wounded in Paris suburb.

An apparent terrorist-related shooting at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo left at least 11 people dead and wounded 10 more in Paris on Wednesday, police said.

French media reported that armed men wearing black hoods stormed the offices of the publication in a suburb of the city before firing automatic weapons in what police described as “carnage.”

Xavier Castaing, head of communications for the Paris police prefecture, confirmed the deaths, the Associated Press reported. Luc Poignant, an official of the SBP police union, said the attackers escaped in two vehicles.

A massive manhunt is now underway across the French capital.

President Francois Hollande, appearing at the scene immediately following the incident, said the shooting was “undoubtedly a terrorist attack” and that several other terror attacks had been thwarted in recent weeks. He described the shooting as an act of terrorism against France.

Hollande announced that France’s terror alert level would now be raised to its highest level and that the assailants — thought to be armed with Kalashnikovs — would be brought to justice. Security was immediately stepped up in public places, retail spots, transportation hubs and offices across Paris.
