The Interview
A bawdy, expletive-laden tale full of sexual innuendo and scatological humour, the film starring Rogen and James Franco is a silly, low-brow romp about a CIA plot to assassinate Kim. The film depicts how girl-chasing, hard-partying, always fashionable tabloid TV presenter Dave Skylark (Franco) and his bromance producer (Rogen), score an exclusive interview with the leader of the world’s most reclusive state.
That is when the CIA steps in and presents them with a plan to kill Kim. Despite initial doubts, Skylark eventually learns the truth about the regime’s brutality, and he sets out to take down Kim by exposing him as a liar during his live interview.

Raunchy North Korea comedy hits US theatres http://cna.asia/1CH7ooM
LOS ANGELES: Raunchy comedy The Interview – the movie that has outraged North Korea for lampooning dictator Kim Jong-un – opened in US theatres on Thursday (Dec 25), a development its star cheered as “super exciting”. Its future had been in doubt after Sony said it was cancelling the release following an embarrassing cyber-attack on its corporate network and threats against moviegoers.
…
Many of the biggest US movie theatre chains had gotten cold feet about showing the film after anonymous online threats, prompting Sony to pull the film. The United States has blamed the Sony cyber-attack on North Korea, and President Barack Obama has threatened reprisals.
FREE SPEECH
But Sony came under fire from Obama and free speech advocates for cancelling the release, and some 300 independent theatres so far have stepped up to show the film. The madcap, irreverent R-rated comedy from entertainment giant Sony was also available online starting Wednesday.
“After discussing all the issues, Sony and Google agreed that we could not sit on the sidelines and allow a handful of people to determine the limits of free speech in another country – however silly the content might be,” Google chief legal officer David Drummond said in a blog post.
The movie was being distributed on Google’s YouTube for a US$5.99 rental fee, on the Google Play app for Android devices and on a dedicated website, seetheinterview.com.

Sony to release The Interview after all, but only in a few US theatres
Happy Holidays! Sony decides to release The Interview, but only in select US theatres http://ow.ly/GnK3A
The latest from the company is that the madcap comedy will be screened in a few theatres in the US on Christmas Day.
Sony chief executive Michael Lynton said: “We have never given up on releasing ‘The Interview’ and we’re excited our movie will be in a number of theaters on Christmas Day.”
He added that the movie would be released on more “platforms” in the future.
The release will likely be limited to smaller movie chains and just 200 to 300 cinemas – a fraction of the estimated 2,500 theatres originally expected to screen the movie.

When a little nation takes on Sony and the USA…
North Korea’s internet black-out: Failing infrastructure or US retaliation for #SonyHack? http://cna.asia/13Aav2Q
US-based Internet analysts Dyn Research said Pyongyang’s four online networks, all connected through Chinese telecom provider China Unicom, had been offline for nine hours and 31 minutes before services resumed on Tuesday morning.
WASHINGTON: North Korea’s internet went dark for several hours amid rumours of US retaliation over its alleged hacking of a Hollywood studio, just as the pariah state came under attack at the UN over its rights record.
It was not clear who or what had shut down Pyongyang’s web connections, but cyber experts said the country’s already limited Internet went completely offline overnight from Monday to Tuesday local time.
…
Dyn Research said Pyongyang’s very limited infrastructure could be vulnerable to power outages but the way it had collapsed “seems consistent with a fragile network under external attack”.
US President Barack Obama and the FBI have accused North Korea of being behind the hacking of Sony Pictures, which decided to cancel the Christmas Day release of comedy film The Interview.
Washington officials refused to comment on speculation that the North Korean internet blackout was the first stage in what Obama has warned will be a “proportionate response” to the hack.

THE INTERVIEW
Sony pulled the movie The Interview on Wednesday following threats from North Korean hackers. The cancellation was in response to a message that appeared online threatening to attack any movie theater that played the film.
The FBI has reason to believe that North Korea is behind this, as well as a recent cyber attack on Sony’s computers. It would make sense that perhaps these attacks are a reaction to the plot of the film, which depicts Seth Rogen and James Franco assassinating North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.

Sony’s current plan for “The Interview’’ is to release the controversial comedy for free on Crackle, the streaming service it owns, sources said Sunday.
Following Sony’s decision to pull the James Franco-Seth Rogan movie after hackers working for North Korea threatened violence, President Obama criticized the studio for being “intimidated by these kind of criminal attacks.’’
Sony pointed out the cancellation came after theater chains and other streaming sites refused to show the film.
