RAT INFESTATION: Second phase of operation sees another 26 rats caught

Published: 11:47 PM, December 25, 2014

SINGAPORE — The second phase of operations to eradicate the rat infestation at Bukit Batok started early today (Dec 25) with another 26 rats caught. So far, more than 230 rats have been caught since the operations to eradicate them started on Dec 18.

Pest controllers, who have been monitoring the area, said they had identified six zones with active rat movements. Four of the zones will be monitored from the nearby blocks, carparks, and the MRT station while the other two will be closely monitored on-site.

Infra-red motion detector cameras with night vision capabilities have already been installed to monitor the movements of rats at night.

RAT-CATCHERS TURN DOG-CATCHERS!

40 stray dogs rounded up at this year:

SINGAPORE: About 40 stray dogs were rounded up in the Bukit Batok area this year, according to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). The authority said it received 100 complaints in 2014 regarding the dogs in the area around Bukit Batok Central, and on those who feed them.

“As there continues to be public feedback about aggressive stray dogs in the Bukit Batok area, AVA will be continuing our stray dog control operations there,” said an AVA spokesman.

The rat infestation near Bukit Batok MRT station has been exacerbated by those who leave food for stray dogs without clearing the leftovers, the authorities have said.

AVA has received about 2,300 complaints on stray dogs, this year. In one instance, a man reported that he was chased by a pack of eight stray dogs from a multi-storey car park to his apartment block.

Authorities say food left behind for stray dogs have contributed to the rat infestation. Despite calls for more responsible behaviour, new traces of food have been found.

BUKIT BATOK INFESTATION: Over 140 rats caught in 3 days, affected area larger than expected

SINGAPORE: Pest busters who are trying to contain the rat infestation beside Bukit Batok MRT said on Saturday (Dec 20) they believe the infestation is affecting a bigger area than expected.

They added that efforts are being hampered by bad weather while new traces of food which can attract the rodents, have been discovered.

Thirty pest controllers have been combing the hill beside Bukit Batok MRT station to tackle the rat infestation. More than 140 rodents have been caught as of day three of the operation and more rats have been found further inside the forested area.

Authorities say food left behind for stray dogs have contributed to the rat infestation. Despite calls for more responsible behaviour, new traces of food have been found.

“For the last two days, because we are conducting operations here, the dog feeder actually detoured and went behind the hill,” said Mr Chan. “Last night, we discovered that they are throwing the food just behind the hill, which is a restricted area. We have also discovered that the amount of food that the dog feeder is providing the dog is quite a large amount, something about 10 kilogrammes.”

“We will just kill them”: Pest control officers work to exterminate rats at Bukit Batok

More than 10 pest control officers from Star Pest Control were seen trapping the rats in cages, after they first arrived at around 8am. Star Pest Control manager Bernard Chan said they had sent two teams of people to treat the burrows where the rats were living in, and a few were caught when they ran out of the burrows.

“This morning, we are treating the burrows, so the rats we trapped were when a few of them ran out,” said Mr Chan. “The active time for the rats will be in the evening, when you will see more coming out.”

“For the later part of the day, when we finish up the operation, we will eliminate the rats … we will just kill them,” he added, when asked what will happen to the trapped rats.

When Channel NewsAsia visited the area on Wednesday evening, more than 30 rats were seen scurrying about, although residents say that the number may sometimes be higher. The MRT station is adjacent to several food establishments, including McDonald’s and a hawker centre.

BUKIT BATOK RAT INFESTATION: Stray dogs are the real victims, says a resident

A Bukit Batok resident, Ms Gina Cheng, also downplayed the infestation as an “isolated case”, adding that she did not think the rats would go to other parts of Bukit Batok. However, she pointed out that the stray dogs might be most affected by the rat infestation.

“I’m more concerned about the safety of the stray dogs,” said Ms Cheng. “They are certainly the victims here – they have nowhere to go except this hilltop. The rodents issue, yes, the town council has to settle, but more so the safety of the stray dogs.”

“It could be because some residents here feed the dogs in an irresponsible way, so the rodents go after the leftover food,” she added.

In a sight that would make stomachs churn, dozens of rats were spotted scurrying up and down a small sandy patch of land near Bukit Batok MRT station.

Bukit Batok resident Ryan Keith Smith, 33, was so disgusted by the rodents running wild that he took videos and pictures of the pests and posted them online.

The posts on Facebook, which had been shared about 700 times as of last night, show the rats running up and down a small slope and slipping in and out of holes in the ground.
