Danger on The Bakun Road, Sarawak

The Bakun Road

Logging trucks are a real danger along the Bakun road. They cause accidents. They are responsible for the deteriorating state of the road which was repaired less than a year ago.

No point negotiating, just block the road, Masing says

KUCHING: There is no point for the Ministry of Works to negotiate with loggers and plantation owners in Bakun area over the ‘lori hantu’ issue, said Land Development Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Masing.

Instead, he suggested that the ministry just proceed to build barricades to prevent the overloaded illegal lorries from destroying the Bakun Road and endangering the lives of other road users.

“I have read The Borneo Post article on Bakun Road this morning (yesterday). Don’t think of constructing barricades at Bakun Road, just do it. These loggers don’t understand the meaning of negotiation or that the Bakun Road is not built for them to use.

“I have suggested the use of barricades many times in the past. So just build them before more accidents occur and many more lives are lost,” Masing told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Masing, who was on leave overseas, was reacting to the plan by Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof to hold a meeting with both the loggers and plantation owners in Bakun area to find an amicable solution to the long outstanding issue of ‘lori hantu’ plying the 120km road.

The Petra Jaya MP said if the planned talk failed, his ministry would then consider erecting barricades in certain parts of the road to prevent the overloaded lorries from using it.

“That we will have to do if the talks with the timber companies and plantations owners fail. After all, there is an alternative road which they can always use,” Fadilah pointed out.

Fadillah plans meeting on Bakun Road issue

by Peter Sibon, reporters@theborneopost.com. Posted on December 17, 2014, Wednesday

KUCHING: Minister of Works Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed that he would meet up with timber operators and plantation owners in Bakun area to find an amicable solution to prevent the 120km Bakun Road from getting damaged by overloaded trucks.

He added that he planned to have the meeting soon as he had received many complaints from local road users that overloaded lorries plying the road not only damaged it but posed danger to other road users.

“All this while, we have been entrusting the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the police to monitor the road but it seemed that it has been to no avail. So I would like to meet up with both the timber operators and plantation owners in Bakun on how to solve the problem amicably,” Fadillah told The Borneo Post here yesterday.

He added that his ministry had spent over RM30 million just recently to resurface the road but now these lorries, commonly known as ‘lori hantu’ by the locals as most of them did not have proper documents, had started tearing the road apart again.

“We are spending tax payers’ money to repair the road, so it’s unfair that we keep on spending so much public money to maintain it. If these timber operators and plantation owners abide by the rule, then we could use the money to build more roads in Sarawak,” said Fadillah.

The menace on the Bakun road – irresponsible logging truck drivers

Monday, July 21, 2014

Over the years several deaths reported along this treacherous road that were directly / indirectly blamed on irresponsible logging truck drivers who illegally ply the Bakun road.

It had been highlighted in the local and national media [see here in The Star newspaper], including in August House, but to no avail.

Truck driver keeps on driving while the logs come loose.
