That riot apart, Little India does have a reputation of sorts. Illegal gambling, drunkenness, foreign women working as ‘hostesses’ and crime are common if not rampant.

He ran to his brother’s Ang Mo Kio home after stabbing a woman in Little India but was tracked down and arrested by the police.
The man, who is in his 20s, allegedly stabbed the woman following what is believed to be a domestic dispute on Saturday night.
The victim, in her 30s, was left clutching her bleeding stomach.
A reader saw the blood-covered woman and alerted The New Paper on Saturday night.
Just before the incident, which happened about 11pm, the victim, her current husband and two children had dinner at a restaurant near Race Course Road, reported Lianhe Wanbao.
The daily reported that her attacker is believed to be her ex-husband.

The nine-hour operation led by Central Police Division was carried out in the Little India and Jalan Besar areas, and was supported by officers from the Criminal Investigation Department, the Traffic Police, the Central Narcotics Bureau and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
The suspects comprise 48 men and 82 women aged between 18 and 73. Of these, 76 were arrested for offences involving illegal employment and the rest were apprehended for illegal gaming, unlawful assembly, drink-driving and other criminal offences.
…The police raided three illegal gambling dens, and four entertainment outlets — KTV lounges and pubs — were found to have possibly breached Public Entertainment Licensing conditions. TODAY understands that these outlets may have been illegally employing foreign women as hostesses.

A majority of foreign workers in Singapore would recommend the country as a great place to work.
That was one of the results of an independent interim survey commissioned by the Ministry of Manpower, following findings by the Committee of Inquiry conducted after the Little India Riots.
Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said in Parliament this week the independent survey by Nexus Link found over 80% of foreign workers here would recommend Singapore to family and friends. Over 90% also reported high levels of job satisfaction, and plan to extend their working stint here.
“Satisfactory pay and working and living conditions were the top three reasons cited for recommending Singapore as a place to work,” Tan said, adding over 70% of foreign workers renew their contracts after the first two years.
“Taken together, these pieces of evidence suggest that the majority of foreigners continue to consider Singapore an attractive place to work.”

As for the sale of alcohol, shops holding retail and wholesale licences will be allowed to sell alcohol, but only from 6am until 8pm on weekends, eve of public holidays and on public holidays.
