You call that a deadly spider? Australian expert ridicules reports from the UK http://gu.com/p/42tvj/tw
Queensland expert says Brazilian wandering spider found in UK family’s shopping pales in significance beside its more lethal Australian counterparts
But Raven said the newspaper’s account of 14 deaths worldwide caused by the spider had probably confused it with a number of reported fatalities for either the redback and the funnel web.
Research had linked the Brazilian spider to 10 deaths at the most, which were “highly likely” to be the result of anaphylaxis, or toxic shock, that could as readily have been caused by an ant bite, he said.
The 14 reported deaths each for the funnel web, which can kill in 15 minutes, and the redback, whose venom is even deadlier, exclude anaphylaxis, he said.
The funnel web “classically speaking” is considered the world’s deadliest spider because it “kills so quickly”.
“In terms of speed of death, in Australia we say funnel web, 15 minutes, no sweat,” Raven said. “With a funnel web bite to the torso, you’re dead. No other spider can claim that reputation.”
However the redback is considered more dangerous because its venom is more powerful and its bites more common, numbering at one point some 10,000 a year.
While it also delivers a “minute” amount of venom, its potency frequently causes anaphylaxis, once killing a woman bitten on the neck in five minutes.
By contrast, with the venom of the Brazilian spider, it is “very slow progress”, Raven said.

The Goliath birdeater spider
ICYMI Scientist stumbles upon spider as big as a puppy http://www.kgw.com/story/news/world/2014/10/19/goliath-birdeater-spider-newser/17571805/ …

(NEWSER) – Strolling through a Guyana rainforest one night, a scientist heard some rustling and thought he’d encountered a furry mammal.
Well, he was right about the furry part.
The creature was actually a Goliath birdeater spider, LiveScience reports — the world’s biggest type of spider, according to the Guinness Book of World Records. It can weigh up to 6 ounces. For comparison, National Geographic reports a black widow weighs roughly .035 ounces; that’s 170 times lighter.
Scientist Piotr Naskrecki writes its weight is “about as much as a young puppy,” while its leg span can be a foot long, comparable with a kid’s forearm, notes LiveScience. The body itself is fist-sized, Naskrecki says. The fangs? Two inches long. The thing won’t kill you, but its bite feels “like driving a nail through your hand.”

The Brazilian Wanderer is also known as a banana spider as it tends to hide in bunches of the fruit.
THE INDEPENDENT
Monday 20 October 2014
The Brazilian Wandering spider ripped off its own leg to escape and had a sac containing thousands of baby spiders
A family has spoken of the “traumatising” experience of finding the world’s most lethal spider in their south London home, which was delivered straight to their kitchen in a Waitrose home delivery.
Tim…discovered the deadly arachnid while unpacking the bananas from the delivery. Shocked, he dropped the fruit suddenly into a fruit bowl, managing to trap the spider by the leg in the process.
After identifying the Brazilian Wandering spider, whose venom is toxic to a person’s nervous system and can kill if an anti-venom is not administered in time, Tim and his wife called Waitrose for help.
Waitrose sent one of its staff members to the house, whereupon the family discovered the spider had torn off its own leg to escape and had disappeared, leaving behind a sac full of thousands of baby spiders.
…
The expert killed the spider’s eggs by putting them in a freezer, and eventually found and trapped the spider in a plastic box, after a standoff in which the arachnid stood on its back legs and held its front legs straight in the air, exposing its fangs in an aggressive attack stance.
