Hidden signs a threat to road safety

Hidden signs a threat to road safety, say drivers

Road signs plastered with advertisements may be an eyesore but for many drivers in the Petaling Jaya-Kuala Lumpur area, clearly visible signs are a matter of road safety, not aesthetics.

Especially on busy city roads, they say, it is difficult to drive when road signs are obscured by leaflets or untrimmed greenery.

Advertisements or leaflets stuck onto signboards is another concern for drivers, especially those who rely on road signs to navigate unfamiliar areas. In some cases, signs are completely covered over, making it impossible to decipher the words or symbols behind the ads.

KUALA LUMPUR, March 9, 2015 :

A sinkhole the size of a wheel caused traffic to slow down in Jalan Maarof, heading to Bangsar. The wheel of a car also got stuck in it.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) Civil Engineering and Drainage Department director Tan Keng Chok said the hole appeared after Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) employees were dragging an underground high tension cable to supply power for a nearby Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd construction site.

“The hole appeared after a 33kv cable was pulled to lay supply for the MRT construction in Jalan Damansara,” Tan said, when contacted by The Rakyat Post today.

Adding that TNB had admitted its fault, Tan said repairs would be conducted on the road tonight.

An image of the hole was uploaded onto biker group Silaturrahim Brotherhood spokesman Azlan Sani Zawawi @ Lando Zawawi’s Facebook page.

Lando, who regularly conducts road repair works on potholes and sinkholes and is part of the Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) WhatsApp group, uploaded images of his conversation in the group, calling on the authorities to take swift action.

MOTORISTS now enjoy a smooth ride along the newly tarred roads in Taman Len Sen and Bukit Anggerik, Cheras.

Bandar Tun Razak MCA chairman Datuk Chew Yin Keen said the resurfacing work on the 2km stretch connecting Jalan 4, Taman Len Sen, and Jalan 2/154, Bukit Anggerik, was completed about a week ago.

“Prior to the resurfacing project, this stretch was riddled with potholes and was uneven. Despite numerous complaints from the residents, there had been no action from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) for the past 10 years.

“Following this, I contacted the DBKL Civil Engineering and Drainage Department, which is in charge of building and maintaining city roads, to resurface the entire stretch. After nine months, the resurfacing works have been completed and we commend DBKL on the work done,” Chew said during a visit.

DBKL Civil Engineering and Drainage Department civil engineer Hamdan Awang said the resurfacing project cost about RM600,000 and took two weeks to complete.

DBKL opens new storage area for towed vehicles

KUALA Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will come down hard on owners of abandoned vehicles in the city, especially those in housing areas.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the vehicles would be towed away if DBKL received complaints about them from the public.

“Vehicles that are deemed unusable, such as those with missing tyres, will be towed away immediately.

“We will also reduce the duration of the grace period for serviceable vehicles before towing them away as they mar the image of the city and also take up parking spots,” he said, during the launch of the new towed vehicle storage depot in Jalan Galloway, Kuala Lumpur.

The depot operates 24 hours daily and it caters to towed vehicles from the city centre, especially the Bukit Bintang area.

PETALING JAYA, Oct 13 — The new one-way traffic loop system in Petaling Jaya which came into effect yesterday left many confused and frustrated.

Locals said the implementation of the three-month trial system which saw Jalan Utara, Jalan Timur, Jalan Barat and Jalan Sultan being turned into one-way traffic was poorly planned.

Communications consultant Karen Johnson said she was shocked to see traffic come to a standstill in Section 52 as early as 7am.

“It was a big mess. All roads were closed and there were no signages erected to indicate the exit and entry points.

“I had to make a huge turn just to get into Section 52 as most roads leading to the area were closed,” said the 41-year-old.

To make matters worse, Karen said the Nutrilite Colour Fun Run was also held at the affected areas yesterday.

“I saw motorists making illegal U-turns at junctions because many were confused with the road system.”

CHAOS BLAMED ON FUN RUN ORGANIZERS!

Chaotic weekend crawl as one-way loop system starts in Petaling Jaya

Massive traffic jam along Jalan Utara Sunday — the first day of the implementation of the one-way- loop system. In the afternoon, motorists were still spotted in both directions.

CHAOS ruled the streets of Petaling Jaya yesterday as the trial one-way-loop system came into effect at 12.01am.

A source from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) said the problems began as early as 4am when the organisers of a fun run in Padang Timur were said to have moved the road barricades for the one-way system to accommodate the event, which attracted about 6,000 participants.

According to the source, much of the chaos faced on the road yesterday was caused by the irresponsible act.

Bukit Gasing assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran said if the allegations were true, the organiser of the event should be issued a hefty fine for causing such severe problems.

“From what I was told, the organisers were not given any approval to carry out the run on the road. However, they may have had permission to use the Padang Timur field.

“If the organisers moved the barricades placed by MBPJ, it is a serious offence and I hope the council comes down hard on them,” he said.
