Perodua Axia debuts this month

FOLLOWING its teaser campaign last month, second national carmaker Perodua has finally revealed the debut date for its new Axia compact model.

As previously reported, the Axia stands as Perodua’s tenth new model in its 21-year-long history. It is also the first certified Malaysian-made Energy Efficient Vehicle in accordance to the new National Automotive Policy (NAP).

Five variants will be available, all powered by a brand new all-aluminium Daihatsu-sourced 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine codenamed 1KR-DE2.

Paired to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain, which offers 66hp and 90Nm of torque, also boasts low claimed fuel consumptions figures of 21.6km/litre and 20.1km/litre respectively.

PERUSAHAAN Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) plans to launch Axia, the country’s first energy-efficient vehicle, next month with expected sales of 30,000 units by year-end.

Perodua president and chief executive officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the new model has to date received 3,500 bookings nationwide.

It will also be exported.

The Axia, Perodua’s 10th model, has 95 per cent local content and is the first EEV rolled out from the carmaker’s new RM790 million plant located next to its existing facilities in Rawang.

The new plant is also the country’s first energy-efficient manufacturing plant.

The development cost of Axia is 30 per cent lower than the other models. Perodua, the largest natio-
nal carmaker, developed the Axia at a cost of RM300 million and it is set to represent a whole new standard for Perodua, the first carmaker to take advantage of the retweaked National Automotive Policy.
