Memories

I HAVE LIVED LONG ENOUGH TO HAVE FORGOTTEN FAR TOO MANY THINGS.

THIS POST RECORDS MEMORIES AS THEY OCCUR.

THE PENANG FERRY

My earliest memories of the Penang ferry was of the long, long queues to get to the ferry terminal itself. It must have been in the 1960s. My Father took us to Penang Island in his Triumph MayFlower car.

Often, it took us an hour to get to the ferry itself.

ALL MY FATHER’S CARS

1. MY FATHER’S FIRST CAR

It was a Triumph Mayflower. It looked so much like a hearse according to others that the neighbours called it exactly that, a hearse (in Cantonese, koon choy chey).

Triumph Mayflower.JPG

It was big enough at the back for all the children: 5 of us siblings and a cousin.

It was considered fast in those days. Top speed was claimed to be 62 mph (100kph). Father’s Mayflower could reach 57mph at times.

When he brought us to Penang in it, he would drive as fast as it could go. What a thrill! Still, it seemed to take forever to get to Butterworth. There would be a long queue to get to the ferry that took the car and us to Penang Island.

*Father did mention once or twice that he had actually owned a Hillman earlier but sold it because water came in during heavy rain.

He may have been taking about one of these. The ones we saw were always black.

2. I THINK HIS NEXT CAR WAS A VOLKSWAGEN. I REMEMBER THE LICENCE PLATE NUMBER, AC81. I have no photo of the car.

The Chinese called it a frog although its official name was Beetle.

I can’t remember the color but it wasn’t white or black. Father repainted it.

My siblings may remember the color.

3. ONE DAY, FATHER CAME HOME WITH A BEAUTIFUL NEW PEUGEOT 403!

AG3681 was the licence plate number. This is the only photo I have of it.

The photo was taken at our church, Ipoh Baptist Church, Cowan Street. That would be my elder brother, Jeffrey, in the driver’s seat, speaking to Ron Lee (now in Australia). About to get into the back seat is Philip Tan, whom I haven’t seen since 1970.

This is Ipoh Baptist Church.
