“Police received a public tip-off at about 1.50pm and rushed to check on the information.

“Investigation revealed that the 1.20pm incident unfolded when two people, fully-masked and wearing helmets stopped at the shop’s entrance.

“The male suspect smashed the display glass with an iron bar wrapped in a newspaper, while the female suspect swept away the jewellery through the opening before the couple fled the scene,” he said.

THE JAGA KERETA MENACE IS IN SEREMBAN!

The jaga kereta menace is found all over the country. We pay up even though we don’t want to. Why? We don’t want 2 flat tyres, long scratches on the door, or a broken side mirror. Worse, they may beat us up.

Here is a letter from R.T.J.H. , Nilai, Negri Sembilan, about jaga kereta at the Yen Kok Chee Temple in Seremban.

“All of them gave those men money as they felt intimidated and wanted to avoid trouble. All they wanted to pray at the temple.”

‘JAGA KERETA’ BOYS: Thugs marred my visit to Seremban temple

17 March 2015 @ 5:13 PM

ON the second day of Chinese New Year (Feb 20), I went to the Yen Kok Chee Chinese Temple in Lobak, Seremban, to pay respects to my ancestors, an annual family affair for more than a decade.

But this time around, my visit was marred by the presence of a bunch of thugs.

As I approached the main entrance, a few men sitting under a tree in front of the temple rushed to block my way and directed me to an empty piece of land behind the temple instead.

Thinking that there wasn’t any available parking space, I followed their directions.

But my cousin who had arrived earlier called and told us to disregard the men’s instruction. Seeing my car make a U-turn back into the temple grounds, one of the men followed us and “assisted” me in parking my car.

Once done, he approached me, and though he did not demand for any money, it was obvious he expected some sort of compensation for his “efforts”.

I had no intention of giving him any money. But my mum who was with me, insisted that I pay the guy and avoid any confrontation, as it was considered bad luck for me to get involved in an argument on this auspicious day.

Traffic chief suggests stiffer penalties for speed demons

PETALING JAYA, June 8 — Bukit Aman traffic police chief SAC Mohd Fuad Abd Latiff believes that stiffer punishment could be necessary to curb illegal racing, which he said has become a trend nationwide.

He said tougher laws should be considered together with more effective campaigns to educate the public about the legal and personal risks involved in illegal racing.

“Authorities need to provide harsher punishments as a deterrence. If one road offender is seriously punished with a longer prison term for example, the others would surely take the police and the law more seriously,” Mohd Fuad said when asked how the police would tackle the illegal racing in Seremban.

Illegal racing in Seremban was highlighted by The Malay Mail recently following residents’ complaints.

Malay Mail reporters had observed how some illegal racers disregarded a police roadblock in Jalan Yam Tuan. The racers on their motorcycles would just speed through or make an abrupt U-turn and drive against the traffic flow to escape the roadblock, risking their lives and that of other road users as well as the police officers on duty.

Motorcyclists try to escape the roadblock in Jalan Yam Tuan on May 25, 2014 by driving against the traffic.

What seemed to annoy the residents even more was the fact the illegal racing was a regular occurrence despite the presence of a police station nearby.

Mohd Fuad agreed the situation in Seremban needed greater attention from the Negri Sembilan police and he felt they must also explore other measures to keep the roads safe.

Seremban police chief Datuk Osman Salleh, when contacted, said they were aware of the illegal racing going on and were taking measures to curb it.

“We carry out a weekly operation targeting these illegal races and those who were caught in action will face time in prison or a fine.

“We hope that in time, they will realise how serious we are in ensuring their safety and also the safety of others around them,” Osman said.

JALAN YAM TUAN

The stretch of road had come under the spotlight on May 14 following the robbery-murder of Sister Juliana Lim in the compound of the Church of the Visitation. Another nun, Sister Marie Rose Teng, was also seriously hurt by the assailant who is believed to have beaten them with a crash helmet.

Some members of the public in the area pointed out that the Jalan Campbell police station was just around the corner and they could do more to stop the illegal racing.

Seremban’s illegal racers won’t stop at anything

xxx

SEREMBAN, May 26 — Jalan Yam Tuan, a 2km stretch of road here, has become infamous for recent robberies but it should also add illegal racing to its list of criminal activities.

Apparently, the road where three major places of worship are located turns into a race track nightly for both cars and motorcycles. Despite all the attention the road has been getting of late, the illegal racing does not appear to have let up.

Early yesterday morning, The Malay Mail followed the police on a roadblock operation from 1am to 3am and the police were given a tough time.

Four exit points leading to the end of the stretch were sealed off with roadblocks.

Many tried to evade capture by speeding through the roadblocks and a few succeeded.

During the operation, a crowd had gathered near a fast food outlet and they were watching what was happening like it was some form of nightly entertainment.

Right after the roadblocks were lifted, the racing resumed as if nothing had happened and it turned the road into a death trap for pedestrians and other road users.

Many cars and motorcycles took to the streets till the early hours of the morning, before calm returned at about 5am.
