Proton Holdings Berhad is said to launch its electric vehicle by 2017 – could it be an Iriz EV?

Just last month at a special preview of the all-new Proton Iriz prior to its launch, we were officially told that the car’s platform was made to accommodate EV/ hybrid systems and that something was coming soon, so the maths of Madani’s statements do add up, and don’t surprise us too much.

At the moment, the local scene does have two imported Japanese electric vehicles to choose from: the 2013 Nissan Leaf(RM168k), and the 2013 Mitsubishi i-MiEV (RM136k). Being 2013 models, the import and excise duty exemptions bestowed on the two CBU cars still keep their prices within certain reason.

Where prices are concerned for the coming locally-made EVs, sub-RM100k figures were mentioned. But nothing else was apparently spared for what’s to happen of the current duty exemptions which apply for all locally-assembled hybrids/ EVs until the end of 2015, as per NAP 2014.

‘Incredible’ price for Malaysia’s EV

Malaysia’s first electric vehicle (EV) is likely to be unveiled and mass-produced by 2017, either by Proton Holdings Bhd or another local player, with an “incredible” price tag of less than RM100,000. Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) CEO Madani Sahari said the “low” price is possible because the whole project, including infrastructure building and lithium-ion batteries production, will be local-centric. He said Proton was now developing its EV and would produce a prototype by end of next year. “Proton is expected to introduce its first EV by end of 2016 or in early 2017 as it usually takes about a year to test the prototype before the car enters the production phase,” Madani said. Proton EV arriving 2017, priced under RM100k – MAI

Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) CEO Madani Sahari has said that Malaysia will produce not one, but two electric vehicles by 2017 – with one of them likely to come from Proton – according to the News Straits Times and Berita Harian.

The dailies reported Madani as saying that the national carmaker is in the process of developing its own EV, and will have a prototype ready by the end of next year.

“Proton is expected to introduce its first EV by end of 2016 or in early 2017, as it usually takes about a year to test the prototype before the car enters the production phase,” he told reporters at the 2014 Automechanika Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Another yet-to-be-named company is said to also be aiming to produce a prototype EV next year – this time in September or October – before putting it into production in 2017. This echoes Madani’s own statements at the public launch of the COMOS EV car-sharing programme last month.

THE PROTON ELECTRIC VEHICLE

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed told Parliament that Proton, like many other car manufacturers, is focused on moving towards producing environmentally friendly cars.

Proton is currently collaborating with UK-based Frazer-Nash Research (FNR) firm to develop its own electric vehicle models.

This is based on the firm’s capability in developing its own intellectual patent in alternative and green technology.

National carmaker Proton Holdings Bhd in September 2011 handed over the first batch of EV prototypes, including three units of the Proton Saga EV and five units of the Exora range-extended EV (REEV) to the government for testing.

Since then the automaker has said it expects to launch the first hybrid car by end-2014, and an EV by end-2015.

Proton will produce a hybrid model by the end of this year, said Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Hamim Samuri. He revealed that to Dewan Rakyat yesterday, in reply to a supplementary question by Gombak MP Azmin Ali.

“The marketing status (price) and quantum of units have not been made known to us, but Proton has assured us that the car would be produced by year-end,” he said, adding that Proton has already developed the car’s prototype.

MAI: Firm to launch electric-vehicle leasing scheme

KUALA LUMPUR: A privately-owned local company will be launching the country’s first electric-vehicle (EV) leasing programme, in an effort to create awareness on the benefits of the vehicle, said Malaysia Automotive Institute (MAI) CEO Madani Sahari.

The company will also introduce EV charging stations in the coming months.

“There are proposals from two local companies to have the EVs on a lease basis,” Madani told the press conference after making his presentation on “providing the necessary framework of policy, incentives and consumer access for the progressive development of the energy efficient vehicle (EEV)” at the E-Mobilia World 2014 Conference here yesterday.

He said the first company, which is set to introduce its EV leasing program within the next few months, will also provide the EV charging stations.

The car rental program, Madani said, will kick-start in Klang Valley and other areas where there is deemed to be demand for EVs in order to ensure the viability of the business. Charging infrastructure will also be installed in these areas.

“We will give options like car rental so that the people can try it and feel it before they start buying one. Without jump-starting the adoption of EV, we can’t even talk about giving incentives because there is no buyer,” he explained.
